Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This song, from the musical "Oliver!", is sung by a bunch of hungry young lads in an orphanage. "Rich gentlemen have it, boys-- In. Di. Gestion!"

Answer: Food, Glorious Food

Living off nothing but gruel, I'd dream of "cold jelly and custard," too!
2. This song, from the musical "Rent," is a meeting for "people dealing with life." "Because reason says I should have died three years ago..."

Answer: Life Support

I've always felt chills when listening to this song. The fact that Roger joins in with Gordon to sing those lines ("Reason says...") was such a powerful way to make many characters' brink-of-death situations real.
3. In this comedic song from "Brigadoon," Meg sings about her futile attempts at courting. "A poet only writes about the things he cannot do."

Answer: The Love of My Life

"Oh, he was a poet, a rhymer was he.
He read me some verse he had written for me.
He said they would move me, these poems from his pen,
An' how right he was, because they moved me right into the glen.
We stayed till the dawn came an' lighted the sky,
Then I shook his hand an' I bid him good-bye.
I never went back, for what I had heard was true:
That a poet only writes about the things he cannot do."
4. This song serves as a means of rebellion for Kim in "Bye Bye Birdie." (movie) "Daddy dear, you won't know your daughter!"

Answer: Lot of Livin' To Do

This has got to be one of the most fun songs to sing. "There are men with childhood behind them. Handsome men from Yale or Purdue. Older men, and I'm gonna find 'em. I've got a lot of living to do. I'm a-gonna have fun, gonna be wild, have my own way. I may break a heart today. Drink champagne as if it were water. Pink champagne, and after a few, Daddy, dear-- you won't know your daughter! She's got a lot of living to do."

Meanwhile, Hugo, Kim's cast-aside boyfriend retaliates with some rebellion of his own. "Think I'll be a ring-a-ding drummer. Make each week a thousand or two. Gorgeous girls will beg for my number. I've got a lot of living to do."
5. This song from "Phantom of the Opera" is performed through the context of the Phantom's opera, "Don Juan Triumphant." "Abandon thought and let the dream descend..."

Answer: The Point of No Return

The Phantom takes the place of the lead actor in this scene of his opera in order to seduce the lovely Christine Daae, his obsession. He wrote his opera for her. Ironically, Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote "Phantom of the Opera" for Sarah Brightman, his wife at the time.
6. This song, from the musical "Aida," is a song of twisted ambition. "We'll extend fair Egypt's power, Egypt's glory, strength, and style.."

Answer: Another Pyramid

Zoser, Egypt's prime minister, tells his son Radames to marry Princess Amneres and assume the throne of Egypt because the Pharoh's health is waning.
7. The non-Disney musical version of "Cinderella" has some wonderful music, including this reminiscent song from after the ball. "The stars in a hazy heaven tremble above you..."

Answer: A Lovely Night

Julie Andrews originated the title role on Broadway in 1957, and it was reprised in a movie in 1997 by Brandy.
8. Another fantasy, this "Fiddler on the Roof" song speaks of Tevye's desire to be wealthy, for many different reasons. "Oy, what a happy mood she's in-- screaming at the servants day and night."

Answer: If I Were a Rich Man

In a very Klezmer-ish style, this song is sung partially on nonsense syllables, giving it a cultural feel.
9. This song from "Guys and Dolls" expresses Sarah Brown's ecstasy at having found Skye Masterson. "Ask me how do I feel from this chemistry lesson I'm learning."

Answer: If I Were a Bell

Sarah gives so many metaphors in this song, an English teacher would have a field day!
"If I were a bell I'd be ringing," "If I were a gate I'd be swinging," "If I were a watch I'd start popping my springs." ...and more!

Was this feeling sparked by true love or a night of dulce de leches?
10. This song from "Into the Woods" introduces all of the characters and their situations.

Answer: Prologue: Into the Woods

"'Into the Woods' blends various familiar fairy tales with an original story of a childless Baker and his Wife, who catalyze the action of the story by attempting to reverse a curse on their family in order to have a child." - http://www.sondheim.com/shows/into_the_woods/#music
11. This song is sung by the royal children whom Mrs. Anna teaches in "The King and I." "And English words are all we speak at the Royal Bangkok Academy."

Answer: School Song / The Royal Bangkok Academy

"Our dear old school!"
12. In this song from "Les Miserables," Enjolras prepares the students and revolutionaries to fight. "In the heart of the city we claim as our own"

Answer: Upon These Stones

This is also the song in which Javert volunteers to "spy" for the revolutionaries, when in reality he is already spying on them.
13. This song, a tad violent perhaps, is from "Little Shop of Horrors." "The guy sure looks like plant food to me."

Answer: Feed Me

This song occurs before Seymour realizes that Audrey II has taken control of his life.
14. This song from "Miss Saigon" is sung by Kim and the whores who long for a real love to treat them right. "A man who will not kill... who'll fight for me instead."

Answer: The Movie In My Mind

These poor women are so horribly mistreated, and all they hope for is "Our children laugh all day, and eat too much ice cream, and life is like a dream..."
15. Another comical song from "Oklahoma!" describes Ado Annie's curious predicament. "What you gonna do when he talks that way? Spit in his eye?"

Answer: I Cain't Say No

I think that this is just a ridiculously funny song because of Annie's attempts at restricting her flirtations.
