Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Till there was me, I don't know who was doing all the work at the River City Public Library. Who am I?

Answer: Marian Paroo

One of the most loved musical heroines, Marian the Librarian gives us such beautiful songs as "Good Night My Someone" and "Till There Was You". From the musical "The Music Man", she has been played by such fantastic actresses as Barbara Cook, Shirley Jones, and Kristen Chenoweth.
2. I am in love with the fantastic boy next door, Matt. Can you try to remember who I am?

Answer: Luisa

With music and lyrics by Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt, "The Fantasticks" opened Off-Broadway on May 3, 1960, and ran there for ... 42 years! When it closed in 2002 it was the longest running musical of all time. Rita Gardner originated the role of Luisa, and Jerry Orbach featured as El Gallo.
3. I have to tell you, long before the actress who played me went on to become Mrs. Brady, I was a teen mother to a child whose father left to go to sea. I married another man, only to have the boy's father return the following year! If that wouldn't give one a restless hart, I don't know what would! Do you know may name, which is also the name of the musical in which I appear?

Answer: Fanny

"Fanny", with music and lyrics by Harold Rome, first appeared in 1954 with Florence Henderson in the title role, and ran for 888 performances. Gary Wright, (who later went on to write the hit song "Dream Weaver"), a child at the time of "Fanny", originated the role of Acolyte.
4. Follow the fold and name me! I'm not a match, watch, goose, gate, bridge or bell. Nope, I'm just a missionary gal. But I tell ya, if I were to be a bell, I'll know, cause I'd be ringing!

Answer: Sarah Brown

In the original cast of "Guys and Dolls", Sarah Brown was played by the Broadway star Isabel Bigley. A huge juicy Broadway rumor was born when the show's creator, Mr. Frank Loesser, reportedly slapped Ms Bigley across the face for not singing the music as he directed!
5. You may know my age better than my name. It's not one of my favorite things to have the boy I love goes Nazi on me. Do you remember who is sixteen going on seventeen?

Answer: Liesl

Laurie Peters originated the role of Liesl, the oldest of the von Trapp children in "The Sound of Music", on Broadway. The part was later played in the film version by Charmian Carr. Liesl and Rolfe are in love and sing the famous duet, "Sixteen Going on Seventeen", but the romance goes horribly wrong when Rolfe joins the Nazi search party, and she is later forced to plead with him to allow their escape.
6. Oh, what would it matter if you know who I am or not? Certainly Anatol wouldn't! I've been waiting for that magic moment for years! Geesh, all that waiting hardly makes for a very gay life now, does it? Do you know me?

Answer: Liesl

In the musical "The Gay Life", set in Vienna near the start of the twentieth century, Liesl longs for the love of Anatol, and sings of the beautiful "Magic Moment" for which she is waiting to be his. The role was played first on Broadway by the legendary Miss Barbara Cook. The show opened at the Shubert Theater on November 18, 1961 and ran for 113 performances.
7. Back off, Gaston! I prefer the hairy and and horrifying. Which of these beauties am I?

Answer: Belle

Adapted from the remarkably successful Disney animated film of the same name, "Beauty and the Beast" depicts a "Tale as Old As Time", in which the beautiful Belle saves the day and finds adventure, a lot of fabulous new friends, and (who would guess) true love in the process. The role was originated by the lovely Susan Egan, and includes songs such as "Home" and "Belle".
8. Oh if I could just get in touch with that gypsy in me, I'd have the gusto to leave that Mr. Oakleigh and marry Billy instead! That would be de-lovely, indeed. Do you know my name?

Answer: Hope Harcourt

In the Cole Porter musical "Anything Goes", the beautiful Miss Hope Harcourt is a wealthy debutante on board the ship, who has committed to a less than steamy engagement to Mr. Oakleigh. Unfortunately her "Gypsy in Me" number is cut in the more popular revised version created for the 1962 revival, but her added duet with Billy, "De-Lovely", more than makes up for it.
9. Tonight is not the time, Chino! I feel pretty, and I am in love with a wonderful boy named Tony. Do you remember the name about which Tony rhapsodizes?

Answer: Maria

"Maria. Say it loud and there's music playing!" "West Side Story", a Romeo and Juliette story set in 1950's NY, had music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by a young Mr. Sondheim, and book by Arthur Laurents. The part of Maria was first played by Carol Lawrence on Broadway, with Chita Rivera as Anita.

In the film version the role was acted by the beautiful Natalie Wood, and sung by everyone's favorite film dubber, Ms Marni Nixon.
10. I hit it on the door knob! Don't blame Billy and don't call me a queer one! I'm just an ordinary New England mill worker, who may or may not be deeply in love, and don't see the use in wondering.

Answer: Julie Jordan

One of my favorite musicals and scores of all time, I've saved "Carousel" for last! Based on the play "Liliom" by Ferenec Molnar and brilliantly made a musical masterpiece by the great Rogers and Hammerstein, this show gives us a truly real (as are all the principle roles) and deeply moving woman, Julie, who paints a picture of true devotion and longing, however tragic and misguided it may seem. "Carousel" includes some of the most beautiful music and lyrics of all time, including "If I Loved You" and "What's the Use of Wondering".
