Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. As I read my morning paper (or website), I'm enjoying which style of writing?

Answer: Prose

Prose uses full sentence structure and no system of rhythm or rhyme, as does poetry. Author Samuel Taylor Coleridge cautioned authors to know the "definitions of prose and poetry; that is, prose - words in their best order; poetry - the best words in their best order."
2. As I leave for work, I look back at my suburban home and admire its single-story style, long profile, large windows and minimal exterior decoration. What style of home is this, popular in U.S. tract housing?

Answer: Ranch

In different parts of the U.S., the ranch home may also be known as a California ranch, rambler or rancher. This style was popular for the housing boom following WWII up until the 1970s.
3. I have tickets for a performance of "Kanadehon Chûshingura", my favorite form of Japanese theatre where the actors wear elaborate costumes and makeup as they dance and sing the intricate dramas. What ancient form of Japanese theatre is my favorite?

Answer: Kabuki

Classic kabuki usually depicts historic dramas. Very recognizable is the stark white rice powder face paint used by actors. Exaggerated facial features are drawn in colors that have emotional significance: positive traits in red, negative in black or blue, green for the supernatural, etc.
4. I work in the public schools of Oakland, California, where a controversy arose over the teaching of what is now known as African American Vernacular English. What is the more recognizable, although negative, term for this dialect?

Answer: Ebonics

The term "ebonics", a blend of the words "ebony" and "phonics", was coined in the 1970s. It entered mainstream use in 1996 when Oakland schools declared that ebonics was the natural language of their African American students, and they needed additional resources to teach them standard English, or at least how to "code switch" between the two dialects.

Modern linguists don't use the word, preferring the more descriptive and less divisive African American Vernacular English (AAVE).
5. On a clear day (or even foggy ones), I enjoy a grand view as I drive acoss the San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge. What style of bridge is the Golden Gate?

Answer: Suspension

In a suspension bridge, the roadway is suspended from load-bearing cables that run over towers. The Golden Gate Bridge has been declared one of the Wonders of the Modern World by the American Society of Civil Engineers.
6. I see a billboard for an art exhibit featuring van Gogh, Gauguin and Cézanne. I'll be sure to attend, as I'm a fan of which style of art?

Answer: Impressionism

Impressionism, an early branch of Modern art, was at first not well received by critics. Begun in the 1870s, Impressionism became an important influence in visual art, literature and music.
7. Approaching my office building, I'm struck by the modern hardscaping of the area. Which feature would NOT be included as part of hardscaping?

Answer: Trees

Hardscape includes anything made of durable surfaces - concrete, stone, metal. This landscaping style is used in urban, high-traffic areas with little exposed soil. Water fountains are considered hardscaping since they contain the water and prevent it from soaking into the soil.
8. The walls of the atrium of my building are decorated with ornamental columns. In between the columns, local artists have painted the walls with scenes from the history of our city. What artistic technique are these paintings?

Answer: Mural

Murals are painted directly on the surface of a wall or ceiling and usually incorporate architectural structures of the space. Marouflage is similar, but instead of being painted directly on the surface, large paintings on canvas are attached to the surface.
9. Entering my office, I see my coworker, Anne, is wearing a new scarf with a design sometimes known as "Persian pickles" or "Welsh pears". What is the more common name of this design?

Answer: Paisley

The paisley pattern uses a shape from Persian art known as the "boteh". This droplet shape was popular in Persian and Indian styles imported by the West beginning in the 18th century. The English term "paisley" comes from the city in Scotland where western textiles using this pattern were first produced.
10. I'm a proud graduate of the second-oldest college in America, and my office furniture style shares the name of this college. What style is this, named for British monarchs, marked by delicate carved ornaments, upholstered chairs, spiral turnings and legs ending in a ball or animal's foot?

Answer: William and Mary

The College of William and Mary was founded in 1693 in Williamsburg, Virginia. The monarchs that chartered this school, William III and Mary II, reigned 1689-1694. William was Dutch, and brought Dutch artisans and styles to the English court.
