Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who painted fat, naked ladies?

Answer: Rubens

Women of his time were considered healthy and attractive with the plumper look. Maybe that is why many of his canvases are oversized.
2. Which Dutch artist was known for his dark canvases?

Answer: Rembrandt

Part of his genius was the ability to focus on a look or expression on a dark canvas. This was, however, not the best technique for group portraits, as the "Night Watch" was criticized for not adequately portraying many subjects to the point of recognition.
3. Who painted with dots, dots, and more dots?

Answer: Seurat

As a practitioner of "pointillism", Seurat anticipated the DPSI (dots per square inch) on modern dot matrix printers.
4. Whose paintings, such as "Girl With a Pearl Earring" and "View of Delft", are characterized by exquisite detail?

Answer: Vermeer

The Dutch painters were known for their realistic portrayal of just about everything in their experience, from cows to peasants to churches to wealthy tradesmen. Some scenes painted hundreds of years ago look identical in photographs today.
5. Who painted melting watches, deserts, insects, and bizarre proportions of objects and figures?

Answer: Dali

Surrealism, and a knack for commercial exploitation. There must be a billion of his signed prints.
6. Whose famous paintings show long haired women, wispy clothes, shells, and forests?

Answer: Botticelli

"Birth of Venus" always clogs the line at the Uffizi gallery, and "The Four Seasons" is in the same vein.
7. A very easy one. Whose themes were frequently olive trees, starry skies, swirls, and self-portraits?

Answer: Van Gogh

One of the greatest, through suffering, failure, and illness.
8. Who painted haystacks and cathedrals, again and again?

Answer: Monet

Please don't mention water lilies. In an attempt to study the effect of light on the appearance and mood exhibited by an image, Monet painted the same subject again and again with remarkable results.
9. Whose work is known for elongated, gaunt figures?

Answer: El Greco

As from another world, his haunting figures and transcendent colors make this transplanted Greek from Toledo one of the giants of western art.
10. Who repeatedly painted ballet dancers?

Answer: Degas

Performing, training, relaxing. He painted them in all situations, and all with dramatic effect.
