Here is a little quiz about my favorite musical. "Sweeney Todd" is the answer to all those who think of musicals as overly sweet. There is nothing at all sweet about "Sweeney Todd".

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The introduction to the play is told by the chorus, with Sweeney Todd arriving just in time for the last verse. In that verse, he says to the audience, "What happens then..." How does he finish this?

Answer: "...well, that's the play"

The entire line is: "What happens then? Well, that's the play, and he wouldn't want us to give it away. Not Sweeney. Not Sweeney Todd - The Demon Barber of Fleet Street."
2. After Sweeney fails to kill the judge the first time he has the opportunity, he rants about the injustice of the world. He sings "And my Lucy lies in ashes, and I'll never see my girl again. But..." But what?

Answer: "The work waits"

The entire line is "But the work waits, I'm alive at last. And I'm full of joy!" He sings this as he decides to become a mass murderer. He plans to kill everyone who comes into his barber shop.
3. Mrs. Lovett asks Sweeney, "What are we going to do about the Eye-talian?" Sweeney responds that they will bury him late at night. Mrs. Lovett know that this will be alright, since...

Answer: "I don't suppose he's got any relatives gonna come poking around, looking for him."

Unfortunately, while Pirelli doesn't have any relatives looking for him, his apprentice, Tobias, DOES want to know what happened to him, if only so he'll have a job. Mrs. Lovett tries to diffuse Tobias' interest in what happened to Pirelli by telling him that Pirelli ran out on him, and by behaving in a warm, motherly fashion towards Tobias. Little does Tobias know that this motherly behavior is just an act, and she would easily have Sweeney kill Tobias too, if it suited her purposes.
4. After Anthony rescues Johanna from Fogg's asylum, she sings: "Will we be married on Sunday? That's what you promised, married on Sunday." How does she finish this musical phrase?

Answer: "That was last August."

Poor Johanna is starting to sound like the other inmates at the asylum by this time, with the way she rambles on. But she also has good reason not to trust the men in her life by this point.
5. At the opening of the play, after the introduction, we first meet Anthony and Sweeney at the docks in London. Anthony, bowled over by the sight of his home city, sings "There's no place like London," a phrase that Sweeney echoes, but with different meaning. Anthony means there is no place as beautiful as London. What does Sweeney mean by the phrase?

Answer: "There is no place as cruel as London."

Anthony has talked about how he has seen the wonders of the world: "From the Dardanelles to the mountains of Peru." Sweeney, when speaking of London says "But the cruelty of men is as wonderous as Peru."
6. After Sweeney realizes that he has killed his own wife, he tearfully accuses Mrs. Lovett of having lied to him. She responds, "No, no, not lied at all, no I never lied...." Can you finish the line?

Answer: "Said she took the poison, she did. Never said that she died."

The entire line goes, "No, no, not lied at all, no I never lied. Said she took the poison, she did. Never said that she died. Poor thing, she lived - but it left her weak in the head. All she did for months was just lie there in bed. Should've been in hospital wound up in bedlam instead. Poor thing. Better you should think she was dead. Yes, I lied 'cause I love you. I'd have been twice the wife she was to you. I love you. Could that THING have cared for you like me?"

This, to me is one of the best parts of the play. It shows so much about character! Mrs. Lovett pretends to be the caring, motherly woman, but she's a greedy, selfish person, who would do anything to get what she wants!
7. Once the Judge is in Sweeney's barber chair, Sweeney makes the decision to delay killing him, so he can make the moment last and enjoy it better. He brings up a subject he knows will have the Judge's full attention. What is it?

Answer: Pretty women

The song "Pretty Women" is often sung in concert. Sung out of context, it sounds like a simple ode to the nature of women. Within the play, however, it has two subtexts. One is the Judge's deviant interest in women and violent sex, along with his self abasement for having such desires. The other is Sweeney's need for revenge, and his joy at toying with his victim.
8. Johanna agrees to marry Anthony, even though...? What?

Answer: She does not know his name.

Johanna feels so trapped where she is, she'll do anything to get out. The play presents Anthony and Johanna as lovers, but there is a lot in the play to suggest that Johanna's interest in Anthony is that he is a means to escape her current situation.
9. Who kills Sweeney in the end?

Answer: Tobias

Tobias kills Sweeney when he walks into the bakehouse to discover the Sweeney has killed Mrs. Lovett. After he kills Sweeney, Tobias' hair turns white.
10. Who are the only main characters left alive at the end?

Answer: Tobias, Johanna, and Anthony

In the end, Johanna and Anthony burst in on Tobias, as he stands over Sweeney's body and grinds up the meat the way Mrs. Lovett taught him to.
