Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Prior to the Trojan War, the Gods decided to throw a divine party where all the deities were invited except for one. Who was the left-out Goddess?

Answer: Discordia

Discordia, as her name implies, was the Roman Goddess of Discord and Strife, especially where military conquests were concerned. Some scholars believe that her Greek counterpart was the Goddess Eris.
2. The uninvited Goddess became angry and decided to wreak havoc on the divine party. What object, with the words "for the most beautiful" engraved on it, did she toss into the party?

Answer: A golden apple

As Discordia most likely presumed, three different Goddesses lay claim to the apple, each believing themselves to be the most beautiful. Ancient Roman and Greek Gods were not portrayed as perfect divine beings, but rather as super-human agents who ruled the universe while also being troubled with human emotions such as envy, anger and empathy.
3. Which Goddess was NOT one of the three who fought over the title "the most beautiful"?

Answer: Concordia

Each Roman Goddess had a specific area of expertise. Juno, the wife of the Supreme God Jupiter, was known as the Queen of the Heavens. She helped women with marriage and sometimes fertility, though this was not her primary duty. Minerva was the Roman Goddess of Wisdom and also lends her name to Professor McGonagall of the "Harry Potter" series, who is portrayed as a wise adviser to both the students and the headmaster. Venus is probably better known by her Greek name Aphrodite, and was known as the Roman Goddess of Love and Beauty. Concordia is the name given to the Roman Goddess of peace and harmony and her name derives from the Latin word for harmony.
4. To decide the dispute over who the most beautiful was, the three Goddesses enlisted the help of a neutral observer, a simple shepherd from Troy. What was his name?

Answer: Paris

In some versions of this story, Paris is actually one of the sons of the King of Troy and not a shepherd. It is hard to say which is true since it is all mythological, but a prince certainly makes for a more intriguing tale.
5. Paris was offered many bribes by the Goddesses, including kingdoms and unparalleled knowledge, but finally decided to choose Venus as the most beautiful. What did she bribe him with?

Answer: Helen of Sparta

Paris took Helen back to Troy with him, which eventually caused the downfall of Troy and the death of many Trojans. Her previous husband was a King of Greece, and wasn't willing to lose her.
6. After Helen's husband, a King of Greece, besieged Troy and burned it down, we are told that a Trojan man survived the war and founded his own city near the Tiber river called Lavinium. What was the name of this man?

Answer: Aeneas

Aeneas was one of the few survivors of the war against Troy.
7. The son of the man who founded Lavinium was called Ascanius, but did not want to follow in his father's footsteps and become the King. Instead he decided to found his own city, and he became the forerunner of 14 descendant kings. What is the name of the city he founded?

Answer: Alba Longa

In some versions of this story, Ascanius is also named Iulius. The name Alba Longa is derived from Latin and means "the long white".
8. The thirteenth and fourteenth Kings of the city founded by Ascanius were twins who went by the names of Numitor and Aemulius. Numitor ascended to the throne first and was the good twin. He was eventually dethroned by his evil twin Aemulius and was banished from the Kingdom; all his sons were killed. What did Aemulius do to Numitor's daughter Rhea Silvia?

Answer: Made her a vestal virgin

Vestal virgins were the closest women came to priesthood in the ancient Roman world. They were meant to be female priests of the Goddess Vesta, and were to remain chaste for a period of at least 30 years. Their main task within the religious system was to maintain the sacred fire of Vesta and they were highly honored by the state.
9. Rhea Silvia was later raped by a God who impregnated her with a pair of famous, semi-divine twins named Romulus and Remus. Which God is traditionally associated with raping her?

Answer: Mars

In Roman Mythology, Mars was the God of war. Many Roman Gods and Goddesses shared names with planets in the solar system, Mars being the fourth planet.
10. The twins Romulus and Remus grew up to dethrone Aemulius and decided to found their own cities. Romulus founded Rome on the Palatine Hill. What happened to Remus?

Answer: He was killed by Romulus

The traditional date of the founding of Rome is April 21st 753 B.C. Remus had begun construction of his own city on a neighboring hill called the Aventine, but soon became jealous of Romulus' quick progress. To thwart his brother's construction of Rome, Remus jumped over the pomerium, a sacred space behind the city wall. Romans believed that if anyone crossed the wall before it had been finished, then anyone in the future could invade the city easily. Romulus thus had to kill Remus to reverse the effects of this curse, so Rome was officially founded by fratricide.
