Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What phrase completes this proverb? When the cat is away,_____.

Answer: the mice will play

The meaning of this phrase is generally understood to be that when the person in charge is absent, the people subordinate to him/her will enjoy their freedom in many ways. For example, when John's parents were on holiday he had a wild party.
2. The way to a man's heart ______ . Can you finish this saying?

Answer: is through his stomach

I think this is one proverb which can be interpreted literally. That is, the way to gain a man's love or affection is to feed him with good, tasty food. (Maybe this also refers to his mother's home cooking!)
3. I imagine many of you will have seen the next proverb but can you finish it? A rolling stone ______,

Answer: gathers no moss

As long ago as the 16th century, a "rolling stone" was taken to mean a wastrel or wanderer who did not stay in one place or job. The moss referred to is very slow growing and so wouldn't have the opportunity to grow on a rolling stone. To most people, then, this means a person who does not settle down does not become attached to anyone, any place or anything.
4. Think prevention for the next proverb! Which phrase completes it? An apple a day ____,

Answer: keeps the doctor away

This saying has been popular for more than a century, probably because it is easy to remember and fun to repeat. People in the past must have believed it to be true, too, though, and nowadays we know that apples contain various vitamins (C, E and A) plus no cholesterol.
5. Which liquid gives the correct ending to this saying? Blood is thicker _____ ,

Answer: than water

This early 19th century proverb stresses the importance of family ties. It urges us to put family before anybody else.
6. During my research for this quiz I found this proverb which had many different opening words. To be fair I will provide two of these words, can you provide the rest? Mighty/Great oaks ______,

Answer: from little acorns grow

According to the website www.phrases.org.uk there are quite a few variants for the saying. For example "Sturdy oaks from little acorns grow", "Big oaks from little acorns grow" and "Tall oaks from little acorns grow". The clear meaning is that great things can (and do) originate from small beginnings.
7. You don't need to live on a farm to know this proverb, but what finishes this phrase? Don't count your chickens before _____,

Answer: they are hatched

I have had this saying quoted to me many times and take it to mean that we shouldn't presume the outcome of any action we might take (especially if it will be beneficial!).
8. Can you complete this adage? Silence is ______.

Answer: golden

I think we all know the meaning of this one. Silence is sometimes a good thing, with words best left unsaid. Also I have heard that many people enjoy what is termed "a comfortable silence".
9. Do you remember the last two words to this common saying? Can you finish it? It takes two ______.

Answer: to tango

This proverb refers to the Argentinian dance the Tango and, just as it needs two people to participate, it also takes two people to affect the outcome of many actions. An example of its use could be, "My sister is pregnant and her husband is very pleased, which is just as well because it takes two to tango".
10. You do not need to be a seamstress to complete the following. Can you finish this? A stitch in time, _____,

Answer: saves nine

It seems that the definition for this adage is that surely it's time saving to repair a small hole now rather than a larger one at a later date. I believe this is promoting a strong work ethic and to not put off things unil later.
