Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "My favorite sport is show jumping", said Tom __________

Answer: Hoarsely

A Tom Swifty is a sentence where a there is a pun, usually an adverb, relating to the spoken sentence. In this example, the pun relies on the homophones "horse" in show jumping and "hoarse" in the way Tom spoke.
2. "I don't want to connect this wire to the anode", said Tom __________

Answer: Negatively

In this case, an anode is the negatively charged terminal of a voltaic cell or battery, therefore, Tom's negative statement and the adverb "negatively" generates the pun referring to the anode.
3. "I love sunbathing", said Tom __________

Answer: In delight

Sometimes the structure of a word is used by breaking it into component parts. In this case, "In delight" becomes "In the light" and references back to the quote by Tom, "I love sunbathing".
4. "I've always wanted to be a fishmonger", said Tom __________

Answer: Selfishly

Again, this is a pun using the adverb "Selfishly", which can be broken down and refer to a fishmonger who would "sell fish". This is an excellent example of a true Tom Swifty.
5. After being well beaten in a chess match, Tom had some _________ for lunch.

Answer: Scrambled eggs

Although the early examples usually used an adverb for the pun, there are other forms of Tom Swiftys such as using a noun in this example. Here, the pun relates to Tom being well beaten at chess, then having scrambled eggs, which by necessity have to be well beaten.
6. When asked what type of holiday he was planning, "Camping", said Tom _________

Answer: Intensely

We are back to the standard type now, using an adverb to make the pun. In order to work, the adverb needs to be broken down into component parts with the similar sounding "intensely" relating to the camping being "in tents".
7. "That pole is about 10 to 12 feet long", said Tom __________

Answer: Roughly

This is a straightforward Tom Swifty with the simple pun relating to two different meanings of the word "roughly". About 10 to 12 feet uses roughly as an approximation whereas the adverb means Tom said the sentence aggressively.
8. "I still haven't received my French bread", said Tom __________

Answer: Painlessly

I've taken a bit of a liberty with this one as it involves a foreign word as one of the component words of the adverb. The French for bread is "pain", so when Tom doesn't received his French bread he is "pain less".
9. "I like the new entrance to my house", said Tom __________

Answer: Adoringly

This is an example where the quoted sentence is linked by a pun to the way it is attributed. In this case, the adverb "adoringly" sounds like "a door in" i.e. the entrance to Tom's house.
10. "My favorite fruit is Passiflora Edulis", said Tom __________

Answer: Passionately

A bit of general knowledge is required for the pun to work. Knowing or deducing that Passiflora Edulis is passion fruit, helps to make the pun work.
