Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I'm ashamed to admit how poor my spelling is. When someone points out one of my mistakes, my face turns red with what?

Answer: Embarrassment

Some effective ways of overcoming embarrassment are to laugh about it, don't keep apologizing for whatever stupid thing you did, and to solicit others' stories of embarrassing things they've done.
2. I'm writing home to mom about my new job driving famous people around in a long black car. Spell check keeps telling me I've spelled my new position wrong. How do I spell my new job?

Answer: Chauffeur

The word "chauffeur" comes from the French word for "stoker" because the earliest automobiles were steam-powered and required someone to stoke the engine. In the days of early motor vehicles, only the rich could afford to buy a car and generally employed a chauffeur to drive.
3. My friend asked me to send her my angel food cake recipe, but before I send it, I check to make sure it's correct. Drat. One word has that squiggly red line beneath it. How do I spell the word that means to remove the egg yolks from the whites?

Answer: Separate

If you're making an angel food cake, make certain that you separate your yolks from the whites. Any little bit of yolk (or oil of any kind) will cause your cake not to rise. I use the leftover yolks to make lemon curd to serve along with the cake.
4. I'm writing a novel about a man hired to murder a politician's rivals. What would be a good title for my book?

Answer: Assassin

Assassin would, of course, be the correctly spelled title. Anna Myers wrote a book titled "Assassin", about the assassination of U.S. President Abraham Lincoln by John Wilkes Booth. I haven't read it, but have heard that it isn't bad.
Since that title is already taken, I suppose I should think of another for my novel.
5. My friend is writing a book about burial customs, and since I frequently photograph interesting tombstones, she has asked for my help in telling about graveyards. What is another word for graveyard, one which I can't seem to spell?

Answer: Cemetery

The word cemetery comes to us from the Late Latin "coemeterium" and the Greek "koimeterion", which mean "sleeping place, dormitory."
While creepy to some, I enjoy visiting and photographing the beautiful monuments and remembrances of people who live only in our memories now.
6. In my story about a girl whose body was taken over by demons, spell check keeps telling me this word is misspelled. How should I spell it?

Answer: Possessed

In the Roman Catholic church, an exorcist is a bishop (or a priest appointed by him) who has a special permission to perform exorcisms. This permission may be granted on a temporary or permanent basis to priests endowed with piety, knowledge, prudence and integrity of life, and specially prepared for this task.
Banishing demons is a deadly serious business, and should not be undertaken by someone who doesn't know what they're doing!
7. What was that line Scarlett O'Hara used? "I can't think about that now. If I do, I'll go crazy. I'll think about that" when?

Answer: Tomorrow

Some other memorable lines of Scarlett's include:
"Why does a girl have to be so silly to catch a husband?"
"Tonight I wouldn't mind dancing with Abe Lincoln himself!"
and the ever popular, "After all, tomorrow is another day."
8. The local newspaper has asked me to write an article about the new concert shelter in the town square park. Concert shelter isn't a pretty enough word to describe this structure. What word should I use instead?

Answer: Pavilion

An open building or large tent used for shelter or entertainment, the word "pavilion" comes from the Old French "paveillon", meaning "large tent or butterfly".
9. I plan to dedicate my life to eradicating spelling mistakes, especially my own. What word am I looking for to describe this promise?

Answer: Commitment

The word "commitment" is from the Anglo-French word "commettement", meaning "the committing of oneself, pledge or promise."
I made up the word "committeement", but it seems a good word to use for a group of officials promising to do something specific.
10. So many misspelled words! I'm worn out from correcting my spelling mistakes and think I'll relax with a frozen drink, but I can't even spell that properly. Thank goodness I can order verbally, because I certainly can't spell out what I want to the bartender. Can you? What's the word I'm looking for when I order my frozen tropical drink?

Answer: Daiquiri

Daiquiris are cocktails made from rum, citrus juice and a sweetener. While I normally would go for a Bloody Mary instead of a sweet drink, I think my brain would really appreciate a good frozen banana daiquiri after this spelling fiasco.
