Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What were Zeus' three main symbols?

Answer: Oak, eagle and lightning bolt

The correct answer is oak, eagle and lightning bolt; the winged helmet is one of Hermes' symbols, and the trident is one of Poseidon's.
2. Sometimes Zeus was tricked. Someone managed to trick him into choosing bone and fat to be sacrificed to him by humans rather than meat; who was it?

Answer: Prometheus

There was an argument over which part of a sacrificed animal would be offered to Zeus by humans and which part they would eat themselves. Both parties wanted the meat rather than bone and fat. Prometheus, knowing that Zeus believed 'bigger is better', wrapped the bone and fat in a big parcel and the meat in a small parcel, and asked him to choose a parcel. Of course, Zeus picked the larger parcel, which contained the bone and fat.
3. Having been tricked into choosing the bone and fat to be sacrificed to him by the humans rather than the meat, Zeus then did what?

Answer: Took fire from the humans

Zeus took fire from the humans, so Prometheus stole the Flames of Olympus. Zeus then chained Prometheus to a stake where his liver was eaten by eagles every day and grew back over night, thereby sentencing him to eternal torture. However, after a while of this, Zeus' son Heracles rescued Prometheus from his fate.
4. Zeus' father used to eat his children. Following Zeus' birth, his mother, Rhea, gave his father a rock wrapped in blankets (which he then ate) and hid Zeus - where?

Answer: In a cave

Rhea hid Zeus in a cave, where there are many versions of who brought him up. When he was grown, he gave his father a poison that would cause him to vomit, thereby releasing his siblings. In some versions, Zeus cut his father's stomach open in order to release his siblings.
5. According to myth, whom did Zeus punish for stealing a golden dog which had guarded him during his infancy?

Answer: Pandareus

According to myth, Hephaestus had made a golden dog which Rhea had sent to guard Zeus during his infancy. Pandareus stole this dog from the temple of Zeus in Crete and took it to Tantalus. Zeus sent Hermes to get the dog back, but Tantalus claimed that he didn't have it. However, Zeus took the dog by force and threw Mt. Sipylus upon Tantalus. Pandareus was turned to stone.
6. Heracles was often described as Zeus' favourite son, and Athena his favourite daughter. Which tree was sacred to Athena?

Answer: Olive trees

Greece is famous for its olive trees; they were described by Sophocles as 'the tree that feeds the children'. These trees account for the olive oil that Greece is also famous for.
7. Where was the secret place in which Rhea hid Zeus?

Answer: Crete

Rhea hid Zeus in a cave on Mount Dicte in Crete during his infancy to protect him from his father, who had eaten all of Zeus' siblings.
8. Zeus condemned Ixion for trying to violate Hera. What was the punishment?

Answer: Ixion was tied to a wheel of fire for ever

Ixion grew lustful for Zeus' sister and wife, Hera, so Zeus created a cloud in the shape of Hera, which was known as Nephele. Nephele and Ixion produced Centauros, who mated with Magnesian mares to produce the Ixionidae. Ixion was thrown out from Olympus and hit with a lightning bolt, then Zeus ordered Hermes to bind Ixion to a burning, spinning wheel for ever.
9. Which nymph had, for a while, the job of talking incessantly in order to distract Hera from Zeus' affairs?

Answer: Echo

Echo was an oread (a mountain nymph) who loved talking. It is said that she distracted Hera from her Zeus' affairs by telling her stories. However, when Hera found out what was happening, she punished Echo by taking away her voice other than to repeat the voice of another.
10. Zeus was the Ancient Greek God of law, amongst other things, and a strong believer in justice. What is the ancient Greek word for 'justice'?

Answer: dikaiosune

Sophos is Ancient Greek for 'wise', doron for 'gift' and geron for 'old man'.
