Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The dog in question is Wellington, a poodle, who is found dead. What implement has been used to kill him?

Answer: A garden fork

Wellington, the black poodle, has been killed with a garden fork. He belonged to Mrs. Shears, a neighbour of Christopher John Francis Boone, the central character in the book. He decides to investigate the death even though he is only 15 and is also autistic.

His father forbids him to get involved, but he ignores this. He writes down all his experiences in a book that he calls his "murder mystery novel".
2. Police suspicion falls on Christopher. When he is questioned he ends up hitting a policeman. Why did he do this?

Answer: Because the policeman touched him

Christopher's autism makes it hard for him to communicate with strangers, and he hates being touched. When the police are talking to him about the death of Wellington a policeman touches him and Christopher hits him. He ends up in a police cell but is later released with just a caution.
3. How does Christopher find out that his mother is not dead?

Answer: He finds letters from her

Christopher's father has always told him his mother is dead. When looking for his book detailing his investigations, that his father has confiscated from him, Christopher finds letters from his mother to him, all dated after her supposed death. His father has hidden these from him. This distresses him so much he is unable to move for several hours.
4. Who is the lady who looks after Christopher while he is at school?

Answer: Siobhan

Siobhan is part professional health carer, part mentor, part teacher. She is with Christopher every day when he is at school and she helps him to understand how the world around him works. It is thanks to her that he has some understanding of his place in society and how to interact with it.
5. Christopher discovers that his mother ran away with Mr. Shears. Who is the neighbour who tells him this?

Answer: Mrs Alexander

Mrs Alexander is an elderly lady, and before he starts investigating the death of Wellington Christopher has never been brave enough to talk to her. She tells him that his mother and Mr. Shears had an affair and that they both left their respective spouses to go and live together.
6. Who confesses to killing Wellington?

Answer: Christopher's father

After Christopher becomes so upset when he finds his mother's letters, Ed, Christopher's father, admits to him that he killed Wellington. He says his temper got out of hand when he had an argument with Mrs. Shears. After this Christopher no longer trusts his father, and is also scared that if he could kill a dog he could also kill him, so he runs away from home.
7. Christopher lives in Swindon. He runs away to try and find his mother. Where does he have to travel to?

Answer: London

Christopher has his mother's address from the letters he found, so he sets off for London to try and find her. His autism makes this very difficult for him as he has to buy tickets, travel on crowded trains and tube trains, and take in what, for him, is an overload of information. Eventually though he does manage to find his mother's home.
8. After being with his mother and Mr. Shears for a short while Christopher wants to return to Swindon. What reason does he give?

Answer: To take his maths A Level

Christopher is something of a genius at maths. The logic of numbers is something his mind can grasp and understand easily. He wants to return to Swindon to take his maths A. Level. Mr Shears does not want him there anyway, so Judy, his mother, rents a place in Swindon and returns with Christopher so that he can live with her.
9. What sort of puppy does Christopher's father give him in an attempt to regain his trust?

Answer: Golden Retriever

Christopher continues to live with his mother and to be terrified of his father. His father comes to see him almost daily, but Christopher tries to stop him from even speaking to him. In an attempt to regain his trust his father gives him a golden retriever puppy and tells him it is up to him to name him. He vows he will regain his trust no matter how long it takes.
10. Christopher always wanted to be an astronaut. However by the end of the book he has changed his mind. What does he think he would like to be instead?

Answer: A scientist

After passing his maths A Level with top grades, running off to London and finding his mother and solving the mystery of the murdered dog, Christopher thinks he can do anything he sets his mind to. He resolves to pass more A Levels, go to University and become a scientist. He continues to live with his mother but does sometimes visit his father at his father's house.
