Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. My name is Leigh Diane Van Voreen. I have silvery-blond hair and blue eyes. I have a lot to tell but let's begin on my twelfth birthday. I had gotten many presents from Momma and Daddy, but which was my favorite?

Answer: a diary

The diary was a gift from my father. It had a rose-colored leather cover, imprinted with the words "Leigh's Book". Although I had gotten many beautiful things this was my favorite because I was so anxious to write down my precious thoughts and feelings.
2. My maternal grandmother's name is Jana Jenkins. Momma always claimed that my grandmother treated her bad and favored her two sisters. What are their names?

Answer: Peggy and Beatrice

Momma always said that her sisters were jealous of her. Every time we'd visit with them they'd stare at me through their thick-rimmed glasses. They are both very ugly and Momma would refer to their body shapes as "ironing boards".
3. Momma told me it was all right for women to be just as promiscuous as men.

Answer: false

Momma told me that it was alright for men to be promiscuous because they wanted to prove their manhood, but not for women. She said women would lose everything important to them and that nice girls don't all the way. I wouldn't find out until later what a hypocrite Momma was!
4. Momma has always been a wonderful artist. One day she told me she was taking me to a place called Farthinggale Manor to visit with the owner, Tony Tatterton, and to see the work she had done. Tony was much younger than I expected him to be. Do you remember what age he told me he was?

Answer: 23

He looked like he was 20. When I said this to him he laughed and said he was 23, which made my mother almost twice his age.
5. Tony has an adorable four year old brother with whom I bonded instantly. What is his name?

Answer: Troy

Troy was so much younger than Tony that Tony was more like a father to him. The two of them had lost both their parents.
6. One day Daddy told me that Momma and he were getting divorced. I was devastated. What was the reason for the divorce?

Answer: Momma was in love with Tony Tatterton

Momma told me she and Tony had been in love for quite some time. I immediately resented Tony. In fact, they were already engaged to be married right after the divorce was finalized! Daddy did eventually marry a woman named Mildred Pierce, but he met her after he and Momma divorced.
7. For some reason Momma did not want Tony to know her true age. What age did she tell Tony she was?

Answer: 28

She told Tony she was 28 years old even though I was 12 at the time! That means she would have been only 16 when she had me. However she said it was very common in the south for women to marry and have children young so it was a believable lie. Momma spent so much time making herself look beautiful. Who would have guessed her true age?
8. Before Momma's marriage to Tony, my grandmother Jana came to visit. She scolded Momma for being deceitful and spinning a web of lies for me to live in. What shocking secret did I find out by eavesdropping on their conversation?

Answer: Cleave Van Voreen was not my biological father.

A man named Chester Godwin is my real father. According to my grandmother, Momma married Cleave and tricked him into thinking I was his child! I vowed never to let my father (Cleave) know the truth. I was terrified that he wouldn't love me as much.
9. After the marriage I was enrolled in a private school for girls. What is the name of the school?

Answer: Winterhaven

The main building of Winterhaven used to be a church!
10. Momma visited me often while I was away at school.

Answer: false

Momma sent Tony to visit me! She always claimed she was too busy, and she didn't want me to seem like a baby who needed her too much!
11. Tony is the successful owner of a company called Tatterton Toys. One day he wanted to start a new project making special dolls for teenage girls. They were to be called "Portrait Dolls" but he needed a model. Whom did he pick?

Answer: me

I was shocked that he wanted to use me as his model! I thought there were so many girls who were far more beautiful than me, but he and Momma were so excited about this.
12. I did not like posing for Tony at all. He was my stepfather and I had to pose in the nude a few times because this doll was supposed to be a replica of me in every way! A few times Tony touched me and made me feel very uncomfortable. What did I do?

Answer: I told Momma.

Momma didn't seem outraged at all! In fact, she called me a baby and told me that artists needed to sometimes touch things to "see".
13. I liked my new stepmother, Mildred Pierce.

Answer: false

I hated her! When Daddy had returned from business I met her for the first time and they told me they had married just the day before! I thought she was turning my father against me and taking his time away from me.
14. What did I not allow Tony to put on the final version of the doll?

Answer: genitals

Tony had assured me that nobody would see anything because the duplicate of the doll (I was to have the original) would be dressed but I still did not feel right about it. Tony was angry at first, but he did not include genitals on the doll.
15. The doll was given to me for my thirteenth birthday. I named her Angel. She had hair from my own head that was secretly kept from a haircut I had months before. She had a locket with an inscription on the back that had two words you could see when you used a magnifying glass. What were the two words?

Answer: Love Tony

I thought it was very sweet of him. At this point in time, I no longer hated Tony.
