Question 1 of 10
1. A light snow begins to fall as you reach your first destination. Fort McGurry is finally in sight, and it's a good thing too - you almost fell prey to a hungry wolf pack that's patrolling the area. The situation immediately reminds you of what novel, written by an American, whose name makes it seem like he's from England? Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. While sipping hot chocolate at a small cafe in Fort McGurry, you notice a patch of space that is brown - an impossibility in the snowy landscape. Zipping your heavy jacket back up, you go to explore this hole in the world, only to find yourself atop a massive cliff. Not only that, there is an army of polar bears, all wearing armor around you. Surely this must be a dream about which book, the first of 'His Dark Materials' trilogy? Since you're soundly asleep in Canada, please use the North American title. Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. Having awoken, you decide it's time to move on. After all, a fictional fort is no place to spend your time. Was that hot chocolate even real? You decide to go somewhere a little more tangible. When you arrive in Gavle, Sweden, you immediately look for charter to Hedeby Island. No one seems to know where you're talking about. Are you really so delusional? Heading toward Stockholm instead, you find the Vanger Corporation. In a bookstore. It may be a Stieg to your pride, but at least you have what novel in hand? Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. Lost in the novel, you look up suddenly to find yourself in a small cabin. You see signs of a struggle, and there's a dead man in the bathroom. You just notice a patch of red on his face, when a herd of deer hustles past. Looking out the window, you see a regular animal exodus going on, and it seems many of them have the red markings, as well. Suddenly, a voice in your head starts talking. Oh well, you think, SSDD. The voice announces itself as "Duddits" and you slowly realize you've fallen into what novel? Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. The train drops you in Bryansk, Russia. Feeling a little out of sorts, you remember your friend Lavrenty Kologrivov has an estate called Duplyanka. It seems to be nearby if the locals can be trusted. You shell out some cash, and get a ride. When the car stops, you see nothing but a frozen stream. How could Yuri have stayed here in his youth, you wonder? What famous novel has your overworked mind led you to this time? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. Spending the ride in a sleeper car, you awake refreshed and ready for anything. Of course, when you step out into a hangar filled with sleek, triangular planes and surrounded by aliens of varying shapes and sizes, you realize you should have limited your readiness to Earth-bound endeavors. As a giant bay door opens, you begin to hear a familiar pew-pew sound. Soon, you see a four-legged metal monstrosity heading toward you. You cheer as you see one of the small planes wrap a long cable around the invader's legs, sending it crashing to the ground. With a sudden gasp, you realize you've fallen into the novelization of which Star Wars movie? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. You wake up wondering if you're in Oz. There seems to be more snow than you remember, but the spell was performed correctly, so a witch should be at your side soon. Right on cue, she rides up in her white sleigh. Is that a munchkin by her side? It looks more like a petrified dwarf. "Are you a son of Adam or daughter of Eve?" she asks. Just then you see what could only be Tumnus the faun beckoning you away, and realize you must be in which acclaimed novel? Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. Eager to be on your way, you hail a cab and ask for the airport. Since it is located an hour north of the city, you spend some time staring at the surrounding landscape. Suddenly, the driver comes to a halt. Looking up, you see a large castle. Is that a young boy scaling the walls? No time for such questions, a rather imposing man has just ridden up on horseback. "I am the Warden of the North," he shouts, "what business have you here?" You reply, "You're from King's Landing," having realized you're now in which book? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. Upon regaining consciousness, you slowly stand up to look around. It seems you're now on top of a mountain. There's a creature that looks suspiciously like a dark elf crouched nearby, ending your hopes that you've awoken. With a flourish, the drow frees his dual scimitars that had hung at his back. Having gotten used to finding yourself in the midst of novels, you call out his name, Drizzt, and ask to parley, since you know you're in which R.A. Salvatore story? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. With a racing heart, you open your eyes. There's still a mountain in front of you, but there is a decided lack of non-humans (if you don't include the nearby yaks). Seeing a nonthreatening local, you ask where you might be. When he says you're at the base camp for Mount Everest, you heave a sigh of relief. It seems you're back on Earth. You must be awake, too, because there are no vaguely familiar names or faces swirling before you, only more snow trying to worm its way under your jacket. Still, you can't help but think about Jon Krakauer's account of the 1996 Everest disaster that left eight people dead. What nonfiction narrative are you recalling? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts

Answer: White Fang

Set in the Yukon Territory you've recently traversed, Jack London published 'White Fang' in 1906, after a serial run in 'Outing Magazine'. The eponymous hero, three-quarters wolf and one-quarter dog, goes through a lot of hardship and loneliness, before retiring to the California sun with his new family.

Answer: The Golden Compass

Your dream led you to Svalbard, home of Iorek Byrnison and his bear tribe. The bears of this world cannot be fooled by tricks, with the exception of those who wish to be human, such as the false king Iofur Raknison. Phillip Pullman originally published his novel under the name 'Northern Lights'.

The name of 'The Golden Compass' came from the original name for the trilogy - 'The Golden Compasses', which, in turn, comes from Milton's 'Paradise Lost'.

Answer: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Originally titled 'Men Who Hate Women', 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' is the first book of the 'Millennium' series by Stieg Larsson. Lisbeth Salander is the main character, although she is better known as 'Wasp' in the online community where she is a superb hacker. Using her incredible ability to remember complex images after only a brief viewing, she finds employment doing investigative work.

This leads her into the mystery the novel slowly unravels.

Answer: Dreamcatcher

You're glad you didn't end up in Derry, the fictional setting for a number of Stephen Kings other works and one of the settings for 'Dreamcatcher', as killer clowns in the sewers ('IT') and a bald doctor keeping you awake ('Insomnia') have no appeal. Not that being put in the middle of the outbreak of an alien virus is much better. Shaking yourself, you snap back to reality and realize you're on a train towards your next destination.

Answer: Dr. Zhivago

At least there's a doctor; You're starting to think you need one. Boris Pasternak's titular physician probably won't help much, though. The fictional Duplyanka takes its name from a small river near the Russia/Ukraine border, hence the frozen stream you see. Time to get back on the train and head for civilization.

Answer: The Empire Strikes Back

While you are ecstatic to be standing among the heroes of a generation of cinema-goers, the eventual destruction of Echo Base on Hoth is looming. Donald F Glut's novelization was published about a month before the movie was released, but you have mere minutes to get out before Darth Vader shows up. Since you've already determined this must be another lucid dream, you tap your shoes together three times and immediately vanish.

Answer: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe

Tumnus leads you past a lamppost toward what appears to be a clothing rack in the middle of the woods. "Step through there to return to your world," he intones, before skipping off. Evading Jadis the White Witch was no small feat, even if it is only a dream.

The author, C.S. Lewis, would be proud. World War II England doesn't seem like a safe place to stay, however, so with a pinch, you awake in the train station of Vladivostok, Russia, fresh from taking the longest train journey in the world via Moscow.

Answer: Game of Thrones

Apparently, your dream is several layers deep this time. Having a George R.R. Martin layer was pretty nice, though. Still, getting back to the real world is gaining in importance to you. Since shoe tapping and pinching haven't had their desired effect, you instead dive into a nearby snowdrift.

The shock of the cold renders you insensate, hopefully auguring the end of this REM-induced adventure.

Answer: The Crystal Shard

Thank goodness Drizzt Do'urden is unlike his wicked brethren, and he's quite happy to help you. After hearing of your journey, he recommends a daring course of action. At a loss for a better idea, you take his suggestion and leap off a cliff. Drizzt steered you well. As with most dreams of falling, you snap awake just before impact. With any luck, you are truly awake this time.

Answer: Into Thin Air

The book was published in 1997 and became an immediate best-seller. "Everest" is a movie based on the same events, although not on Mr. Krakauer's recalling of them. Having had enough adventure, both real and dreamed, you hike your way back toward Lukla, intent on catching a plane to Kathmandu and then home.
