Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Amelia Peabody appears first in "Crocodile on a Sandbank". What is her maiden name?

Answer: Peabody

Amelia Peabody becomes Amelia Emerson after marrying Radcliffe Emerson, but throughout the series Emerson generally addresses her as "Peabody". She, in turn, almost always calls him "Emerson".
2. Vicky Bliss appears in five books by Elizabeth Peters. What does Vicky Bliss reluctantly agree to do at the beginning of "Night Train to Memphis"?

Answer: Give lectures on an Egyptian cruise.

Vicky agrees to give lectures when the police approach her. They have reason to believe someone is planning a heist at the Cairo Museum, and they want Vicky on the spot. Why? Because the suspected thief is her on/off lover/rival, "Sir" John Smythe.
3. Why is Vicky Bliss shocked when she meets John in Egypt in "Night Train to Memphis"?

Answer: Because he has married Mary.

Vicky is shocked when John arrives with a bride. For one thing, she can't believe he's married, and for another, he's been carrying on a love affair with her. Mary turns out to have a very nasty taste for spouse abuse.
4. Jacqueline Kirby is the protagonist of a series of books by Elizabeth Peters. What is this character's real name?

Answer: Jacqueline Kirby is her real name. She's a librarian.

Jacqueline "Jake" Kirby is a middle-aged librarian who becomes a romance writer. She has green eyes, red hair and glasses that always slide down her nose. She is embroiled in a number of titles including "The Seventh Sinner", "Naked Once More" and "The Murders of Richard III". Jacqueline Kirby is her real name and she has a grown son (David) and a daughter, but almost nothing else is known about her private life.
5. Amelia Peabody has a passion for a particular aspect of Egypt. What does she long to investigate?

Answer: Pyramids

Amelia loves pyramids, and makes every effort to get inside one. Bats, mummies and lurking robbers scarcely put her off her stride.
6. What is the real name of "Cousin John", who appears in "The Camelot Caper"?

Answer: John Tregarth

"Cousin John" really is Jessica Tregarth's cousin, and his name really is John. However, David Randall, who later marries Jessica, doesn't realise this when he dubs the two comic villains chasing Jess all over Cornwall "Algernon" and "Cousin John". This is the first time the reader meets John, who also appears in four of the five Vicky Bliss titles.
7. Who did John buy Egyptian earrings for in "Night Train to Memphis"?

Answer: He bought them for Vicky, but Mary forced him to give them to her.

John bought the lovely earrings originally for Vicky, but his violent wife forced him to give them to her. Vicky got them in the end (and presumably disinfected them before putting them on...)
8. David Randall appears in "The Camelot Caper". What is striking about David?

Answer: His nose, his occupation and his sense of humour

David likens his nose to the one Cyrano de Bergerac sported, writes romances for a living and certainly has a weird sense of humour. He derives amusement from a long game of cat and mouse through the English countryside with American Jess.
9. Where does Vicky Bliss live and usually work?

Answer: Munich

Dr Vicky Bliss is an art historian and assistant curator at a museum in Munich, where she works for the rotund and charming Herr Schmidt. Schmidt loves country music, cream buns and melodrama, and Vicky writes a serial story which amuses him. Schmidt, though, is much less inept than he seems. Like John, the other man in Vicky's life, Schmidt is a ham!
10. What is odd about the way Elizabeth Peters' novel "Devil May Care" is written?

Answer: It begins with one chapter from the point of view of Ellie's soon-to-be-ex-fiance, and the rest is from Ellie's point of view.

At the beginning of the book Ellie and her fiance Henry are heading to Ellie's Aunt Kate's house, where Ellie is to house-sit while Kate is away. The first chapter is told from Henry's viewpoint, then Ellie's viewpoint takes over for the rest of the book.
11. What competition is Jacqueline Kirby longing to win in "Naked Once More"?

Answer: An outline writing contest. The prize is the right to produce a sequel to Kathleen Darcy's best-seller, "Naked in the Ice".

Jacqueline is one of several authors competing for the right to produce a sequel to Kathleen Darcy's best-seller. Kathleen vanished seven years ago, leaving behind a sketchy outline, so writers vie to produce a suitable outline to match Kathleen's. Jacqueline wins, but ultimately she doesn't write the book.
12. What is Amelia Peabody's weapon of choice?

Answer: Her parasol

Amelia has a stout parasol to protect her from the Egyptian sun. It is also very handy for prodding or directing people, and she uses it quite often in self defence.
13. What present does Ellie bring for Aunt Kate when she arrives to house-sit in "Devil May Care"?

Answer: A book on history

Ellie brings a book on local history for Kate. It causes endless trobule, because it has an ancient document concealed in it. However, Aunt Kate would probably have appreciated the other items as well.
14. What item causes all the trouble for Jessica in "The Camelot Caper"?

Answer: Her grandfather's ring

Jessica has her grandfather's ring, taken by her father when he left home years before. Her dying grandfather has asked Jessica to return the ring to Cornwall, but mysterious villains seem to want it too.
15. If you stood Vicky Bliss, Amelia Peabody and Jacqueline Kirby in a row, how would you identify them?

Answer: Vicky is tall and blonde, Amelia has black hair, and Jacqueline is a green-eyed redhead.

There would be no trouble telling these heroines apart. Vicky is very tall, statuesque and blonde; a Viking Goddess type. She is the youngest. Amelia has a trim figure and "jetty" black hair, which might be touched with grey. She is in her late twenties in the first book, and must be in her fifties by now. Jacqueline is in her forties.

She has long red hair, green eyes and glasses which she wears for reading.
