Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The novel begins with Saboor narrating a fairy tale to his two children, Abdullah and Pari. In the story, an ogre-like creature known as a div visits different villages. What difficult choice does he pose to a family in each village?

Answer: Giving up one of their children

The div is described as a monster who visits different villages. At each village, he stops at any one house and knocks. The family living there then has until morning to decide which of their children to give to the div. If they were unable to decide on which child to give, the div would take all of the children in the morning.

Saboor ends by telling the children that sometimes families have to sacrifice one to save the remaining.
2. Saboor's wife had died while giving birth to Pari, and Abdullah had taken on the role of bringing up the little baby, although he was hardly a few years older than her. Willing to go to any lengths to bring a smile to Pari's face, what item did Abdullah trade his shoes for to give her a surprise?

Answer: Peacock feather

Pari loved to collect feathers of different birds. When Abdullah heard that peacock feathers were available in a nearby village, he walked all the way there and ended up trading his shoes in order to get one for Pari.
3. Saboor later remarried and his second wife, Parwana, had a brother, Nabi, who was employed as a chauffeur by a wealthy Afghan couple, Nila and Suleiman Wahdati. In which big city did Nabi live?

Answer: Kabul

Nabi worked for the Wahdatis, a wealthy couple who lived in an affluent section of Kabul. Nila, the wife, showed a keen interest in Nabi's family and even visited them in the village. When Nabi was taking her back home after the visit, she broke down and revealed the cause of her deep sadness to be her inability to have children of her own. Being secretly in love with Nila, Nabi eventually came up with the idea of having the Wahdatis adopt Pari which would give Nila a child and also provide financial assistance to his sister's family.

Shadbagh is the fictional village where Saboor and his family lived.
4. The separation of the siblings was much harder on Abdullah, as Pari's young age helped her to forget her original family and adapt to the Wahdatis. What caused Nila to take Pari and move to France a few years later?

Answer: Suleiman becomes paralyzed after a stroke

Nila and Suleiman had an unhappy and indifferent marriage right from the beginning. After they adopted Pari, they did try to behave like a family for her sake but the distance between the couple remained. A few years later, Suleiman had a stroke that left him paralyzed and unable to care for himself. Nila found herself unable to tend for him and chose to move to France with her daughter. Nabi continued to look after his employer, and it was later revealed that Suleiman had always been in love with Nabi.

While this revelation did make Nabi uncomfortable in the beginning, the two settled into an easy companionship with Nabi staying beside Suleiman till the latter's death.
5. While the main plot is concerned with the story of the siblings Abdullah and Pari, other pairs of siblings and cousins also make an appearance through various secondary characters. Which of the following had a twin in the novel?

Answer: Parwana, Saboor's second wife

Each chapter in the novel is narrated by a different character, leaving room for even some of the secondary characters to have a fleshed out back story. Parwana and Masooma were twin sisters born in the same village as Saboor. Masooma was the more beautiful and popular of the two, and Parwana spent her childhood and adolescence in the shadow of her twin.

In due course both end up falling for Saboor. Parwana resents her sister's popularity and fearing Saboor would choose Masooma over her, she causes an accident which results in Masooma becoming an invalid. Parwana appears to repent for her rash act and takes on the responsibility of tending to her paralyzed sister.
6. Timur and Idris were cousins who had been neighbours of the Wahdatis before their family migrated to America. Why did the cousins return to Afghanistan after the US troops defeated the Taliban?

Answer: To reclaim their property

Idris had studied and become a doctor while his more flamboyant cousin, Timur, held various jobs including that of a used car salesman. While Idris appreciated Timur's generosity, he resented the fact that his cousin made sure his benevolent acts were well publicized.

When the cousins returned to Kabul, they found out that Nabi had inherited the Wahdatis house after Suleiman's death and the place had since then been given to a Greek doctor, Markos, to stay in. Markos had come to Afghanistan to help with the rehabilitation process.
7. Markos is a Greek doctor who comes to Afghanistan to help rebuild the country after the destruction wrought by the Taliban. He muses that his decision to become a plastic surgeon may have its roots in his childhood friend, Thalia's accident. What was the cause of Thalia's facial disfigurement?

Answer: A vicious dog bite

Thalia was the daughter of Markos' mother's childhood friend. When she was five years old, she had been attacked by a dog at her stepfather's house. A botched operation to correct it aggravated the disfigurement and Thalia lost most of her mouth, compelling her to wear a mask covering her lower face. Embarrassed about her daughter's appearance, Thalia's mother abandoned her at Markos' house. Though he was initially repelled by her disfigurement, Markos and Thalia eventually formed a close bond, and Thalia stayed back at the island to look after Markos' aged mother.

Markos eventually forms the link that helped to connect Pari with her original family. When Nabi died, he left a letter giving details of Pari's adoption and her birth family to the Greek doctor.
8. One of the subplots involves a boy named Adel who lives with his parents in a big mansion built where the village of Shadbagh once stood. Tired of his lonely life, he quickly befriends a boy named Gholam. What links Gholam to Abdullah's family?

Answer: He is the son of Iqbal, Abdullah's half brother.

Saboor marries Parwana after the death of his first wife. Their eldest son, Omar, dies when hardly two weeks old due to a bitter winter. This is the trigger for Saboor to agree to Pari's adoption when Parwana is pregnant the second time.

After Saboor's death, Iqbal and his family, along with Parwana, move to Pakistan seeking refuge. Once the Taliban are defeated, the family returns to reclaim their land, only to find that Adel's father has taken over the entire village and no trace is left of their old house. Gholam befriends Adel while Iqbal approaches the court to regain his land. The court officials are bribed by Adel's father, and Iqbal's original property papers are claimed to have been lost in a fire.
9. Abdullah eventually settled in America after having lived in Pakistan for a while. Unsurprisingly, what had Abdullah named his only daughter?

Answer: Pari

Abdullah was never able to get over the loss of his sister, Pari. He often told his daughter the story of how he was separated from his sister. Little Pari grew up with vivid memories of the lost girl and adopted her as her imaginary twin sister. She often dreamed of being the one to unite her father with his long lost sister.
10. Do the separated siblings, Abdullah and Pari, meet in the end?

Answer: Yes

The older Pari manages to track Abdullah and his family through the internet and contacts his daughter. Unfortunately, by the time Pari makes it to America, Abdullah has already reached an advanced stage of dementia, and has no recollection of the sister who was such an integral part of him throughout his life.

After the older Pari returns to France, Abdullah is finally moved to a nursing home by his daughter. While packing her parents' belongings, Pari finds a box left behind by Abdullah when he was first diagnosed with dementia, along with a note addressed to his sister. The box contained feathers of all types that Abdullah had carefully collected for his beloved Pari over the years.
