Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who wrote 'Blackwater'?

Answer: Michael McDowell

Written by McDowell in 1983, it still has the power to chill. McDowell does weird things with water in a lot of his books; they literally become characters.
2. 'Blackwater' was written serial style. How many volumes were there?

Answer: Six

Stephen King would eventually use this same method for 'The Green Mile', which became one of the better movies ever put out in Hollywood. No-one has ever picked up McDowell's work for film.
3. What is the name of the town that the novel takes place in?

Answer: Perdido

Perdido, Alabama actually exists.
4. What day and year did the flood hit Perdido?

Answer: Easter Sunday, 1919

The flood had reached the top floor of the hotel, and had kept the townspeople on high ground for a week.
5. The Caskey family was the wealthiest in town, owning and operating the lumber mill, which was badly damaged by flooding. Another mill owner who had a tough time recuperating was Henry Turk. Who was the third mill owner?

Answer: Tom DeBordenave

Tom DeBordenave borrowed money from James Caskey to rebuild his mill. He later sold it, for obvious reasons: see next question.
6. What was the ultimate fate of John-Robert DeBordenave?

Answer: Dismembered by Elinor as sacrifice to Perdido.

Elinor had led John-Robert outside by the levee. There she tore his arms and legs free of his body, where they became buried in the clay used for {construction;} hence the sacrifice. Up til that point, construction had slowed greatly. After John-Robert's death, work resumed at the regular pace.
7. Who came to Perdido to draw plans and oversee construction of the levee?

Answer: Early Haskew

The Hines Brothers were the local builders, but more of the house variety, Carl Strickland was a no-good, working many labour jobs. Leo Benquith was the town doctor.
8. Elinor Caskey gave up her first born daughter to escape the clutches of her mother-in-law, Mary-Love, to her husband Oscaor's dismay. What was the daughter's name?

Answer: Miriam

The Caskey's had a habit of trading offspring. Miriam grew to resent her parents for giving her up, but later on she formed an uneasy truce.
9. Elinor had her husband Oscar buy every parcel of land in the surrounding (and sometimes rather far) areas, especially swampland, as they became available. What was so special about the land?

Answer: contained oil

Because of Elinor's 'strangeness', she knew the swamps contained millions of gallons of crude oil. The Caskey's became millionares themselves: many times over.
10. What happened after Elinor's death?

Answer: The floods returned

After Elinor died, the floods came and wiped Perdido off the face of the map.
