Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the name of the castle that Phillip FitzRobert brought to King Stephen when he defected?

Answer: Cricklade

Brien de Soulis was the castellan of Faringdon. La Musarderie was a castle Phillip acquired later by ambushing its original owner. Beaumont was the family name of the Earl of Leicester.
2. To find and rescue his son Olivier de Bretagne, Brother Cadfael set off to attend a peace conference, held in which city?

Answer: Coventry

On the way he ran into Yves Hugonin, Olivier's young brother-in-law, who was also there looking for Olivier.
3. Brien de Soulis was murdered at the conference and Yves Hugonin was accused of the crime. But Yves was not detained. Why?

Answer: The Empress Maud protected him

Phillip wanted to have Yves arrested but the empress would not allow it. Phillip then laid an ambush to abduct Yves to La Musarderie.
4. Cadfael found in de Soulis's saddlebag a seal which belonged to Geoffrey FitzClare, a captain at Faringdon. What apparently happened to FitzClare?

Answer: He was thrown from a horse

Cadfael deduced he was in fact murdered by de Soulis because he would never have agreed to the surrender of Faringdon.
5. What animal was featured on de Soulis's own seal?

Answer: swan

De Soulis's seal featured a swan and willow wands. FitzClare's seal had a salamander on it.
6. What was Olivier's response when Phillip told him Cadfael was his father and had come to offer his life for Olivier?

Answer: He has cheated me!

Olivier felt his pride injured because Cadfael's unsolicited sacrifice loaded him with too much debt, but he soon got over it.
7. After Yves was released, who did he first go to with his plan to rescue Olivier?

Answer: Robert of Gloucester

Unfortunately Earl Robert was not at Gloucester. The empress was only too happy to take advantage of the earl's absence, and rush to capture and hang his son.
8. Who did Cadfael enlist to help him carry Phillip's shrouded body?

Answer: an officer under the empress

He considered asking the chaplain, but decided it had to be someone who was ignorant of his plan and therefore could not be blamed.
9. Having delivered Phillip to the Augustinian Abbey at Cirencester, where did Olivier go next?

Answer: To his wife in Gloucester

He went home first to see Ermina, and then went to Hereford to find Robert of Gloucester, who came with him to the abbey.
10. What gave away de Soulis's killer in the end?

Answer: A ring

Jovetta de Montors wore the same seal ring as FitzClare had. A mother avenging the son who never knew her, she reminded Cadfael of his own quest for his son. It's a very touching ending.
