Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Carrot joined the City Watch in 'Guards, Guards'. But what was the name of the dwarf girlfriend he left at home with a 'beard soft as a very soft thing'?

Answer: Minty Rocksmacker

Dwarfs age at a different rate to humans, so Minty is only sixty and far too young for a boyfriend (both male and female dwarfs have beards, making dwarf courtship a very careful matter!) Carrot, by letter three home, has gone from 'Please give all my love to Minty. I really miss her' to 'I hope Minty is keeping well'. Out of sight...
2. Angua was recruited under the Affirmative Action Hiring Programme in 'Men At Arms'. Who was not hired under this programme?

Answer: A Vampire

Angua was recruited along with the troll, Detritus, and the dwarf Cuddy. Of course Angua brought a little extra something...Vimes does not recruit a Vampire (and then under protest) until 'Thud'.
3. Who is the first 'person' to realise that Angua is a werewolf in 'Men At Arms'?

Answer: Gaspode

Gaspode the talking dog told Angua that it's a smell thing. He was willing to accept a pound of steak to forget it, though! He also helpfully told Angua what had happened at the Assassin's Guild.
4. Carrot walked Angua home after their first watch together in 'Men At Arms' and was quite disturbed because she was staying at Mrs. Cake's boarding house. Who was not one of her fellow residents?

Answer: Nobby Nobbs, a Watchman

Poor Carrot had no idea that Angua was a werewolf, and rather unwisely confessed his prejudice against the undead. Angua fitted right in at Mrs. Cake's, whose own daughter, Ludmilla, was also a werewolf.
5. In 'Men At Arms', Carrot called and took Angua for breakfast and showed her around - she became aware he was trying to court her by gift-wrapping what?

Answer: A city

Carrot 'wears' Ankh-Morpork and Angua even feels jealous of the city. Even though she's only known him a couple of days, she's already in love. Of the wrong answers, Angua wouldn't have welcomed a rare steak, as in human form she's vegetarian.
6. In 'Men at Arms' Angua and Carrot had their first disagreement in Captain Vimes' room when Angua found out, as she thought, that Vimes had been spending half his money on women. Who were Mrs. Galkin, Mrs. Scurrick, Mrs. Maroon and Annabel Curry?

Answer: Three widows and an orphan of Watch coppers

Angua jocularly said that Annabel Curry couldn't have been much good for only two dollars. The temperature dropped as Carrot explained that she was only nine years old. With no pension scheme, Vimes looked after them himself.
7. Carrot and Angua spent the night together in 'Men At Arms', until Carrot woke up at four a.m, threw the curtains open and Angua turned into a werewolf. Carrot instinctively drew his sword and Angua leapt out of the window. What made her go back?

Answer: Carrot was hurt

Gaspode was trying to persuade Angua to go back (and not get his throat ripped out) when Angua sensed that Carrot had been hurt. Up to then, she'd been very upset because Carrot had drawn his sword - but as Gaspode said, she could at least have hinted 'it was that time of the month'!
8. Vimes wanted to kill Dr. Cruces when he found him in 'Men At Arms', but Carrot said he wouldn't let Vimes do that. What did Carrot say when Vimes asked him 'He killed Angua. Doesn't that mean anything to you?'?

Answer: 'Yes. But personal isn't the same as important'

Carrot would never have said any of the wrong answers! Life would be a lot easier if we all realised that personal isn't the same as important.
9. At the end of 'Men At Arms', Carrot took Angua's body back to the Watch House and put it in the morgue. He washed her fur as best he could. What did he do next?

Answer: He wrote his report

'The human mind's reaction to stressful circumstances'. He also swept the floor (it was his turn on the rota), washed, changed, cleaned his armour, drank a toast to Sam and Sybil - and then waited in his room until the moon rose - and Angua walked softly in. Only silver could kill a werewolf!
10. At the beginning of 'Feet Of Clay', Carrot was having breakfast at Gimlet's cafe, when Gimlet asked about Angua. Carrot said she was around and about. Where was she?

Answer: Under the table, sharing his meal

Angua as a wolf was quite happy with half a mutton chop and a sausage.
11. In 'Feet Of Clay', a new constable arrived from Uberwald, Angua's home country - what did Angua immediately detect about this new constable?

Answer: It was a female dwarf

Cheery Littlebottom by name! Didn't like fighting, gold or quaffing. Wanted to wear 'lingerry', but unfortunately hated werewolves. Liked Angua because she was normal (!)
12. All through 'Feet Of Clay', Angua planned to leave Carrot, because it'd never work out between them. Why did she stay?

Answer: Carrot asked her to help tidy up the Dwarf Bread Museum

Angua had packed everything and planned to leave, but how could any woman or werewolf refuse an offer like that?
13. In 'Jingo', why did Angua tell Carrot his disguise was not suitable?

Answer: It was meant for a potato

Brown bowler hat, pink nose, thick black mustache. Carrot thought the potato was just for display purposes. Carrot didn't understand why a potato needed a disguise!
14. Mrs. Spent rented Carrot Ossie Brunt's room in 'Jingo'. How many of her four rules of the house did he break by having Angua in the room?

Answer: Two

No wimmin and no pets. As Angua said '..she's got me coming and going!' (She was allowed to say things like that). The other two were no cookin' and no music.
15. In 'Jingo' 71-hour Ahmed captured Angua by putting a collar on her. Rubies, emeralds and diamonds set in what?

Answer: Silver

She couldn't rub it off and the silver seemed to freeze and burn her simultaneously.
16. In 'Jingo', when Vimes asked Carrot whether he and Angua had any problems, Carrot replied that she bought her own dog biscuits and had a flap in the door. What did he say happened at full moon?

Answer: He didn't really get involved

I personally don't think a gentleman like Carrot would have made Angua buy her own dog biscuits! Maybe it was a feminist thing, like going Dutch?
17. In 'The Fifth Elephant', where is Angua when she smells the 'him' that makes her go home?

Answer: On duty with Nobby

Having just arrested Done It Duncan, Angua smelt something even above Eau de Nobbs (getting in touch with his feminine side again).
18. When Carrot discovered Angua had gone missing in 'The Fifth Elephant', he tried to resign from the Watch. Vetinari gave him an extended leave of absence and suggested he started his search for Angua where?

Answer: Shambling Gate

Vetinari always had his finger on the pulse of the city. Although both Vetinari and Carrot knew that Angua was heading for Uberwald, the Shambling Gate is where he suggested Carrot start. Bootham Bar is a place in York, UK, where (according to my Dad) my Great-great something Grandfather was the last man to be hung for horse-stealing. I have no idea if this is true.
19. When Gaspode and Carrot discovered Angua's trail in 'The Fifth Elephant', someone/thing had taken six fowls and left three dollars in the chicken house. How much did the robbed farmer sell chickens for at the gate?

Answer: Tenpence

Three dollars (i.e. Fifty pence each) would have bought six fine chickens at Ankh-Morpork prices. Angua paid for chickens because animals wouldn't.
20. In 'The Fifth Elephant' Angua's wolf friend wouldn't object to being called Gavin, because he once ate someone called Gavin. True or false?

Answer: True

He hadn't eaten all of him - just enough to ensure the man set no more wolf traps. Gavin was a big, brave wolf - he'd gone all the way into Ankh-Morpork to warn Angua what was happening back in Uberwald.
21. What did Angua ask Carrot to stop being in 'The Fifth Elephant'?

Answer: Nice

Angua begged Carrot to stop being so nice and saying 'Sorry'. Shortly after this Carrot tried out not being nice by replying to Angua's 'If the runner was bright and nimble he got four hundred crowns and Father had him to dinner at the castle' with 'If he lost, then your father had him for dinner out in the woods'. Angua felt that Carrot may have had an undiscovered natural talent for not being nice.
22. In 'The Fifth Elephant', what did Wolfgang (Angua's brother) break of Carrot's?

Answer: His arm

Wolfgang was an extremely nasty piece of work. He broke Carrot's arm even though Angua hadn't tried anything.
23. At the end of 'The Fifth Elephant', who did Carrot remind Angua 'never look back'?

Answer: Wolves

This is such a pivotal book in Angua and Carrot's relationship.
24. Sally the Vampire joined the Watch in 'Thud'. Did Angua like her?

Answer: No

Werewolves loathed the perfectly groomed vampires, who always made them feel they were having a bad hair day, and didn't trust the black ribboners either. The fact that Sally fancied Carrot couldn't have helped, either!
25. In 'Thud', Sally and Angua were both wearing nothing, standing in mostly mud and squaring up to fight - mostly about Carrot. What did Sally suggest was missing?

Answer: A paying audience

Sally was thinking here. They could have made a fortune! I hope you enjoyed this quiz - and I shall follow the Love Affair with close attention. Please don't forget to rate it - and I welcome all feedback!
