Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Cassius is obsessed with his own death. At which point does he NOT threaten to kill himself or ask someone else to kill him?

Answer: When the soothsayer tells Caesar to beware the Ides of March.

Cassius is the picture of a model citizen in the opening scene when Caesar is confronted by the soothsayer, but in the other three, his darker nature is sharply revealed. When he fears "prevention" from Popilius Lena, he tells Brutus he will "slay himself" should his fears have truth in them.

In his charged argument with Brutus in Act 4 Scene 3, he asks Brutus to take forth his heart with his dagger. At Phillipi, he asks Pindarus, earnestly, to kill him, and Pindarus obliges. Thus Cassius leaves the play.
2. Which adjective is not literally used many times to describe Cassius?

Answer: Conspiratorial

Cassius is referred to as "Old Cassius" by Antony in Act 5 Scene 1, as Cassius probably has some years on him. Cassius refers to himself as "an elder soldier" in his fight with Brutus. "Dangerous" is used a few times by Caesar in the opening, as is "lean". Brutus calls Cassius "slight" when they argue.

While Cassius is indeed conspiratorial, no one ever calls him this. He's so good no one really sees it. (Don't you just want to smack Brutus for not seeing it? Or maybe he didn't want to...)
3. Who gets this grating criticism from Cassius? "you are dull...those sparks of life that should be in a Roman you do want."

Answer: Casca

When Casca is frightened by the supernaturally charged night before the Ides, Cassius rebukes him for his fright.
4. Who gets this very different grating criticism from Cassius? "he doth bestride the narrow world like a Colossus!"

Answer: Caesar

Caesar the "god" himself. Cassius is clearly not a fan.
5. What symbolic meaning does Cassius find in the day that the Battle at Philippi takes place?

Answer: It's his birthday and his life has come full circle.

Cassius feels his life closing on the same day it started. In the play, it is not nearly a full year since the day Caesar died, though historically it was approximately two years. Junius Brutus is not mentioned in this particular scene, and Cato's battle is not either.
6. According to Caesar, which is NOT a reason why Cassius is a bad person to have working for you?

Answer: He is scary.

Caesar maintains that he doesn't fear Cassius through the whole rant. However, Cassius' reclusive ways and thin look are threatening to Caesar, as clearly this shows Cassius to be a malcontent. Always bad for aspiring dictators.
7. What particular fault does Brutus not accuse Cassius of during their Act 4 Scene 3 fight in Brutus' tent at the battlefield?

Answer: Easily flattered.

Brutus tells Cassius that he has an "itching palm" meaning he is easily bought by undeserving people who want promotions. Brutus also tells Cassius that he denied him gold, which counts him miserly. Cassius' famous "choler" dominates much of Brutus' criticism.
8. These next three questions are simple fill-in questions with quotes of Cassius'. "I am glad that my weak words have struck but thus much show of ----- from Brutus."

Answer: fire

Cassius is making a casual statement about the famously quiet Brutus and his surprising emotion at the mention of removing Caesar. Cassius is feeling like his cause is getting off on the right foot.
9. "Let ---- --- ----- fall together."

Answer: Antony and Caesar

Cassius was trying to convince Brutus that Antony should not outlive Caesar, as Antony's connections could give the conspirators a very hard time. Brutus flatly refuses, saying that he doesn't want to kill any more than necessary.
10. Lastly, "Caesar, thou art ------, even with the sword that kill'd thee."

Answer: revenged

In my edition, it says "revenged" but I'm accepting "avenged" because I have seen some editions with "avenged". Anyway, this is Cassius' last line as his servant Pindarus kills him with the same sword Cassius used to kill Caesar.
