Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The prelude begins from the viewpoint of one of the ten Heralds directly after the last Desolation. This event takes place 4,500 years before the events of the book. What is this Herald's name?

Answer: Kalak

Founder of the order of Knights Radiant known as Willshapers, Kalak was the last Herald to give up his Honorblade after the events of the Last Desolation. If a Herald dies during a Desolation they automatically return to the realm of Odium where they undergo constant physical and mental torture until the next Desolation. If they survive, they are under obligation to return voluntarily. Only one Herald perished during the Last Desolation, and the other 9 decided to break the Oathpact. Kalak's only regret is leaving his friend Talenel'Elin to endure the tortures of 10 men.
2. This dark eye character studied with his father to become a surgeon, but instead became a soldier when his little brother is enlisted in the army. After his brother's death he is branded and sold into slavery. He is then sold to an army on the Shattered Plains, after receiving a Shash brand meaning dangerous, and becomes the leader of Bridge Four. He is also able to Surgebind. What is his name?

Answer: Kaladin

Kaladin Stormblessed lost his little brother to the wars and is later made a slave for defeating a Shardbearer and saving his Brightlord. Though he has many moments of despair he becomes an inspiration to his men. After being left to die in a highstorm it is discovered that Kaladin can breathe in stormlight and in turn use the stormlight to Surgebind.

He is believed, at this point in the series, to be one of the ancient order of Knights Radiant known as Windrunners, giving him the ability to change gravity and also heal himself.

He is most likely the only person on Roshar to ever survive a highstorm.
3. The world of Roshar is inhabited by beings from Shadesmar know as Spren. These strange creatures are attracted to all sorts of different things. One Spren in particular has a huge impact for one of the character's in the book. She claims to be a Wind Spren and appears as a tiny lady. Invisible unless she wants to be seen, what is this Spren's name?

Answer: Sylphrena

Syl for short, Sylphrena is an Honor Spren and a child of the Stormfather. She helps Kaladin fight his despair in being a slave, and helps him learn to Surgebind. She first introduces herself to Kaladin when he is being brought to the Shattered Plains by slavers.

When Kaladin and Bridge Four are assigned to permanent chasm duty, Syl helps them forage for supplies so Kaladin can secretly train his men as soldiers.
4. Though not a point of view character, this horneater cook from Bridge Four is very important. He was given a strait razor as a gift from his brothers in Bridge Four as a token for all the pots of stew he makes. His birth name is Numuhukumakiaki'aialunamor, but what easier pronunciation does he go by?

Answer: Rock

"Air sick Lowlanders!" Rock is Kaladin's right hand man and one of the first from Bridge Four to accept him as a leader. He is also the only other Bridgeman that can see Syl. Rock was on a quest with his master to help his people win a Shardplate from Sadeas.

After his master's defeat, Rock and the rest of his master's entourage are left to work in service to Sadeas. Rock was assigned to be a cook, but was made a Bridgman after putting Chull dung in Sadeas food.
5. On a quest to save her family from her late father's debts, this character is a light eyed daughter from a small House in Jah Keved. She intends to steal a Soulcaster from the self proclaimed heretic Josnah Kholin. She also falls for an assassin who nearly kills her with jam and bread. What's her name?

Answer: Shallan Davar

Shallan plans to steal a Soulcaster from Josnah Kolin in order to save her family from debt incurred by her late father. She succeeds in becoming Jasnah's ward, and finds that she loves the life of a scholar more than anything else. She eventually steals the Soulcaster, but only after witnessing Josnah murder three men who try to rob them on the streets of Kharbranth.

She has many secrets that have not been told up to this point in the series, however it has been hinted that she bears a Shardblade.
6. Born in Shinovar, this character has been named "Truthless" by his people. It is still unclear why he has been made an outcast, but it has a lot to do with his ability to Surgebind. The Alethi people refer to him as "The Assasin in White". What is his Truthless name?

Answer: Szeth-son-son-Vallano

He was named Seth-Son-Neturo, but is now named Seth-Son-Son-Vallano when made Truthless. Only those that hold his Oathstone can control him, giving him no control over his own destiny. His history is vague, but we know he was sent by the Parshendi to kill King Gavilar.

His Oathstone then passes from master to master until it ends up in the hands of the merciless Taravangian, who gives Seth a list of Kings and Brightlord's to murder. Saddened by his actions, Seth will always apologize to his victims before the deed and will cry for their passing. Like Kaladin, Szeth has the ability of a Windrunner, and with his latest assignment at the end of the book to kill Dalinar Kholin, a fight between Kaladin and Szeth has become inevitable.
7. This next character is something special. He is known throughout Alethkar as the "Kings Wit". Basically, his job is to insult those the King can't afford to insult. He is also the only character (as of this point in the series) to appear in more than one of Sanderson's Cosmere Novels. Though most likely not his real name, what name does Wit go by?

Answer: Hoid

Hoid has made appearances in every Cosmere series so far. His appearance may differ, but he is always the same. Look for an extravagant storyteller and you most likely have found Hoid. When not insulting Brightlords, Hoid tends to look out for Dalinar and Kaladin.

It is also known that Sigzil from Bridge Four was once a Wordsinger apprentice to Hoid. The mystery of Hoid is even more baffling when, at the end of the book, he is waiting at the exact spot where Talenel'Elin appears to announce the coming Desolation.
8. Brother to the fallen King Galivar, this character, known as "The Blackthorn", suffers from visions during every highstorm. His Sons' believe that he is slowly going mad, but he believes the visions to be from the All Mighty. What is the name of this High Prince?

Answer: Dalinar Kholin

On the night of his assassination, Gavilar asked Dalinar to "follow the codes". Dalinar did not heed his advice and became inebriated at the feast, which violates the first code. After Gavilar's death, Dalinar has a change of heart about the codes and the book they came from, "The Way of Kings".

By the end of the book he is appointed as High Prince of War by the King, and is given a quest to reinstate the ancient order of Knights Radiant by the Stormfather. After being left to die on the Shattered Plains by Sadeas, he is saved by Kaladin and Bridge Four. Dalinar then buys the freedom of all of Sadeas Bridegmen with his Shardblade "Oathbreaker", and makes Kaladin the Captain of his Cobalt Guard.
9. Son of Dalinar and eldest Prince to the Kholin name, this Shardbearer has a love for dueling. He would be champion if his father would only let him take a break from his duty to "The Codes". He rides a Ryshadium named Sureblood, and has not yet named his Shardblade. Who is he?

Answer: Adolin Kholin

Adolin is the son of Dalinar and next in line as High Prince of Kholinar. Even though he is one of the greatest duelists of his time, he is under strict instruction from his father not to participate. By following the codes, a ruler must refrain from drinking, dueling, and must always be in uniform during war time.

He and his brother Renarin are worried about his father's mental health due to his "attacks" during highstorm's.
10. Proclaimed as High Prince of Information by the King, this character is Dailnar's main rival. This High Prince uses slaves as Bridgeman to cross the many chasm's on the Shattered Plains. He does not allow the Bridgemen to equipt armor or shields lest the Parshendi attack his own troops before the bridge's can be crossed. Hated by Adolin and Kaladin equally, who is he?

Answer: Torol Sadeas

On the day of King Gavilar's assassination Sadeas dressed up as the king to divert the assassin, but unfortunately for Galivar the ruse did not work. He is known for his cruel war tactics regarding bridgemen. Later in the story, Dalinar and Sadeas team up during Chasm runs. When they attack The Tower, Sadeas betrays Dalinar and withdraws his bridges, leaving Dalinar's army vulnerable and isolated. Kaladin, sick of Sadeas cruelty, saves Dalinar and his troops by returning to the battle with Bridge Four.
