Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What kind of weather phenomenon was striking the Flathead Valley?

Answer: chinook

As Cromwell's train was being pursued by Bell, Carr, who was a hostage on Cromwell's train, explained to Abner Weed that it looked like a chinook was forming. When Abner inquired about what a chinook was, Carr explained that it was a major storm usually of winds strong enough to blow locomotives off the tracks.

He also warned that the ferry at Wood's Bay would not be likely to go across the lake with the seas being rough. Abner, undeterred, said they were going across the lake one way or the other.
2. What did Bell's train slam into in its pursuit of Cromwell's train?

Answer: hay wagon

As Cromwell's train was in sight, Bell's train unfortunately met up with a hay wagon crossing the tracks. The driver of the wagon possibly misjudged how fast Bell's train was moving and slowly plodded across the road. The train tried to stop, but it was too late. The wagon was destroyed in a thousand pieces, but the driver and his horses survived.
3. How much time did Bell estimate they lost in this slight accident?

Answer: 12 minutes

As the driver backed Adeline up to retrieve Bell, he stated to Bell that they probably lost about 12 minutes. Even though he lost time, Bell was confident that they would catch up with Cromwell's train, or at least catch him before the ferry would attempt to go across the rough lake.
4. What was the name of the ferry at Wood's Bay?

Answer: Calaspell

The ferry was called the Calaspell. It was already tied up and ready to go. The captain was waiting for the seas to die down so he could transport Cromwell and his boxcar over to Rolands, which was on the other side of the lake.
5. Bell managed to leap onto the ferry as it was pulling away. How far was the ferry from the dock when Bell made his jump?

Answer: 8 feet

The Calaspell was moving out towards the center of the huge lake when Bell caught up with it. Without hesitation, Bell leaped the 8 foot distance between the dock and the ferry. He made it onboard, but not without injury. Bell cracked two ribs as he clung to the railing after the jump.
6. What happened to the lifeboat onboard the ferry?

Answer: it was swept away

As Captain Boss struggled to keep Calaspell's bow pointed into the waves, a rogue wave from the chinook washed over the forward part of the deck, smashed the lifeboat and carried it off the deck. Boss alerted his engineer, Reagan, that the boat was gone. He had originally told Reagan that he was to take himself up to the deck and unlash the boat.
7. What was happening to the train after Bell climbed aboard it?

Answer: it was falling off the ferry

After Bell climbed aboard the boxcar that Cromwell was in, he took a look at Cromwell's palace on wheels. While keeping his gun trained on Cromwell, Bell sensed the train moving and noticed out the freight door that the train was falling off the ferry.
8. What did Cromwell and his sister do?

Answer: they stayed on the train

As Bell was urging the Cromwells to jump, Cromwell took two shots at Bell; both missed. Margaret then grabbed Cromwell and firmly planted herself on the floor. As the boxcar went into the water, Bell fell out of the car, but the Cromwells stayed inside, never to re-emerge.
9. Back in the 1950's, what kind of car was Marian Morgan driving when she picked Bell up from the dock?

Answer: Packard

When Bell was done meeting with Van Dorn and discussing a finder's fee for the salvage crew, he noticed his wife, Marian Morgan, sitting in a car. The car was a Packard and they decided to drive all night back to California.
10. Where did Bell tell Van Dorn he was living now?

Answer: San Francisco

Bell told Van Dorn he would be going back to San Francisco with his wife, Marian. He informed him that he had bought Cromwell's old mansion and that was where they were staying now. Bell fell in love with the city after the earthquake and decided to call it home instead of Chicago.
