3. In what month did Lizzy, Tim and their father leave home to go on a canoe trip?

Answer: October

Mike was making plans to take his kids on a canoe trip so they could see the way nature was before it was practically destroyed by a horrible winter that was on its way. When they left home, they started to float down a river and then the canoe flipped over and they were all tossed out into the icy river. Mike broke his leg and Lizzy and Tim managed to get to shore without being seriously harmed.
4. How did Lizzy's father die?

Answer: An illness

After the canoe flipped over and Mike broke his leg, all three of them managed to get to shore. Later on, Mike caught a horrible cold and it was so bad that when Lizzy and Tim woke up the next morning, he was dead. Lizzy and Tim were both furious and sad at the same time and they were also on their own.

They buried their deceased father and then they started to head out into the cold forest.
5. In what year did Lizzy and her stepbrother Tim get lost in the middle of winter?

Answer: 1921

Lizzy was actually telling the story of how she became a survivor of a horrible winter with her stepbrother about fifty years after it had happened. In the beginning of the story, we also found out that Lizzy was a nature enthusiast when she was sixty years old.
6. What was the name of Tim's mother?

Answer: Pauline

According to Lizzy, part of Pauline's hair was already turning gray when she was only in her thirties. Pauline actually taught Lizzy how to cook meals and Lizzy said that she liked her stepmother a lot.
7. Did Lizzy and Tim find a cabin when they were lost in the woods?

Answer: Yes

When Lizzy and Tim found a cabin, they made themselves at home and they were hoping that the owner would return and then they could ask him if he could help them. Unfortunately, the owner never returned but Lizzy and Tim were harassed and physically abused by a criminal who had recently escaped from prison.

The criminal who was only known as Mr. Sharp had been hiding in the woods so the authorities could not find him. When Mr. Sharp found the cabin, he practically ate all of the food that Lizzy and Tim had and he also stole many of their provisions.
8. What did Lizzy make as a Christmas present for Tim?

Answer: Mittens

Lizzy used some of the blankets that she had to make the mittens for Tim. The night before Christmas, Lizzy wrapped the mittens up and she put them underneath a tree that Tim brought in for Christmas. When Tim woke up the next morning, he found the present and he was very happy when he found out that he obtained something to help keep his hands warm.
9. What was the name of the criminal who tried to kill Lizzy?

Answer: Mr. Sharp

Near the end of the story, Mr. Sharp tried to kill Lizzy by strangling her and when he did, Tim smacked him across the back with a chair. Mr. Sharp pulled out a gun and he tried to shoot Tim but Tim got out of the way and he missed. Later on, Mr. Sharp lost the gun and then Tim found it.

He went back for Lizzy and they got into Mr. Sharp's boat and then they started to float down the river again.
10. Did Lizzy and Tim ever make it back home?

Answer: Yes

At the end of the story, Lizzy and Tim found a farm and they told two men what had happened to them over the last couple of months. Pretty soon, they were back home once again but without their father. But, their father taught them how to survive in the winter and when they were lost. So, if Mike had never taught his children how to survive, they probably would've died too.
