Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What does "khef" mean?

Answer: Life

Introduced in "The Gunslinger", (book 1) "khef" means several things, "life" being among them. Roland is referred to as having progressed through levels of the khef, therefore meaning that he moved through stages of his life. Freedom, desert, and wisdom have nothing to do with khef, however.
2. Here's a very important one, used a lot throughout all four books. What is the approximate meaning of "ka"?

Answer: Fate

Ka, approximately meaning "fate," is one of the most common words in High Speech used in the "Dark Tower" series. Eddie Dean also calls it "everyone's favorite whipping boy," because it's used to explain away so many things; people's actions, deaths, and virtually anything which has no reasonable explanation.
3. This one is not High Speech, but rather a mannerism used as a gesture of politeness or respect. If being done before a male, it's done by tapping the left side of your collarbone three times with the fingers of your right hand. How is it done before a female or a group of people?

Answer: Tapping the base of your throat three times

Three taps to the base of the throat is the way that Jake did this gesture before Blaine the Mono, who was male (if trains have a gender). Blaine pointed out this mistake, and Roland taught Jake how to do it correctly. That was from Book III, "The Wastelands", by the way.
4. Unlike most words in the High Speech, this word has a direct, single meaning: "death."

Answer: Char

Roland mentions this word in "The Wastelands" after seeing Jake's "Charlie the Choo-Choo" book. Get it? Anyway, "sigul" means something else entirely, and "muerte" and "mort" are the Spanish and French words, respectively, for "death."
5. What is the approximate meaning of "ka-tet"?

Answer: One from many

This word was (I think) introduced in "The Drawing of the Three", and while it means "one from many," a better way to think of it is a group brought together by a common fate.
6. Which of the following ways might a character from Mid-World say "thank you"?

Answer: Thankee-sai

As you'll remember, Roland often said "thankee-sai."
7. You've seen the word "sigul" in one of this quiz's answers so far. What does "sigul" mean?

Answer: Badge or insignia

Sigul is not used too often throughout the series, certainly not as often as "ka" or "ka-tet," but it does come in handy to know for quizzes like this one. Oh yes, and future "Dark Tower" books. :o)
8. What are you said to have forgotten if you've done something shameful or foolish?

Answer: The face of your father

A saying popular with Roland and his ka-tet.
9. What is a popkin?

Answer: A sandwich

This word for "sandwich" was introduced in "The Drawing of the Three", where Roland (through Eddie Dean's body) tasted a hot dog and Pepsi for the first time. It sounds like it would be a cross between a napkin and a corkscrew, don't you think?
10. Last one! Which of the following words is a synonym for "smart"?

Answer: Trig

Trig (while sounding like a math class) is the only adjective there, besides "manto," which is a slang term for "homosexual." A "cull" is a kid or young guy, and "graf" is apple beer. So, now you know. I hope you enjoyed this quiz, thanks for playing it!
