Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Whose mom was shot by her husband at the start of the novel, which led to Sookie running Merlotte's for a short time?

Answer: Sam's

It was the dawn of a new day. The were-creatures decided to reveal themselves to humanity as the vampires had a couple of years prior. A werewolf from Alcide's group changed on live television and Sam and Tray changed inside Merlotte's. Sam's mom took the opportunity to reveal to her husband her true identity, which led to the man shooting her. Sam had to leave town for a few days and Sookie ran the bar in his absence. Arlene became unglued at the knowledge of Sam's true self, and quit the bar after years of service. This left Sookie in a bind to arrange enough wait staff, so she turned to an old enemy.

In the HBO TV series "True Blood", Sam has no known biological kin in season one. He was shown to be adopted and shunned when he first turned into a dog.
2. The FBI came to Bon Temps to interview Sookie about her involvement in the hotel explosion several months earlier at the Pyramid of Gizeh.

Answer: True

Agents Sara Weiss and Tom Lattesta had a photograph of the aftermath that showed Sookie standing with fellow intuit Barry. They seemed to believe she was psychic based on witness reports on how the pair led them to survivors buried in the rubble. Sookie was able to breathe a small sigh of relief when she realized that they did not know Barry's identity.

She and Amelia directed the Feds into an area of thought that she and Barry had a small affair after they'd helped police and rescue workers, but that Sookie never learned his name. Neither agent believed her.
3. Which Hotshot local was found crucified in the back parking lot of Merlotte's?

Answer: Crystal

While being interrogated at her home, Sookie received a call informing of the crucifixion at the bar. She and the agents went to Merlotte's and found Jason's estranged wife Crystal murdered on a cross. She was in her animal form, a werepanther. Tanya, also a Hotshot resident, was helping Sookie out at the bar and could have been targeted. Mel, formerly of Hotshot, had become Jason's latest best bud in light of Hoyt hooking up with Holly.
4. Sookie was warned about a deadly fairy uprising. The first time Sookie was approached by an assassin, what was the outcome?

Answer: she killed him with a trowel

Niall came into Merlotte's to see her, and then Mr. Cataliades sent Diantha to her home. But it was through two of the triplets that she discovered the enormity of the situation. Breandan (pronounced Bren-dawn) was the only other fairy prince, and he did not follow the same path as Niall and his "family". Breandan was actually Niall's nephew, son of the fairy's dead brother Rogan. Breandan believed that all mixed blood fairies (like Sookie and Jason) should be eradicated.

It turned out that Jason was the spitting image of Dermot, Niall's defiant son. Dermot and Fintan (Sookie and Jason's grandfather) were fraternal twins. Fintan was murdered on Breandan's orders ages ago, and Dermot was on Breandan's side.

After the warnings, Sookie was outside weeding a flower bed when the first assassin arrived.

He underestimated her, as often happened, and spoke aloud, "I'll enjoy killing you for my lord". She turned and stuck and iron trowel into his stomach. Iron was to a fairy as wooden stakes were to vamps.

He died there on her lawn and she had to call in reinforcements to deal with him.
5. Did Eric send Bubba down to Bon Temps to offer Sookie protection?

Answer: Yes

For some reason, I thought Bubba had died in an earlier chapter of this series. But, Sookie narrated that he'd been badly injured and had spent many months recovering from his wounds. Sookie herself was feeling the enormity of her fairy situation and finally decided to take advantage of what was owed her.

She called in favors from Eric and Alcide. Eric sent vampire Bubba, formerly Elvis Presley King of Rock n Roll, to stay with her in Bon Temps. Alcide sent over Tray Dawson, who was already living in town, to protect her during the day.

Unfortunately, Tray was poisoned on his first day by a person posing as Bill's human lover.
6. Which person in her life tried to set Sookie up to be crucified?

Answer: Arlene

Arlene, who quit her job at Merlotte's in a fit of intolerance, called Sookie and feigned a desire to make amends. She asked Sookie to give her some time to ready her home, but instinct made Sookie leave her own home immediately. She arrived at Arlene's, but hid behind the trailer and watched the scene unfold. Arlene's truck was out front, another truck was hidden in back with wood planks in the bed, and Sookie watched as a woman came to collect Arlene's kids. Sookie could hear the intent floating in the minds of Arlene, and the two men in her home. Arlene planned to leave before Sookie arrived and found herself ambushed by the men. Sookie also realized sadly, that these were not even the culprits behind Crystal's murder. That crucifixion had just served as inspiration. Sookie called the police and waited, but had to confront Arlene before she left the premises. Thankfully the cops did arrive before Sookie could be hurt, but one man was killed, Agent Weiss was shot and Arlene experienced a minor bullet graze to her shoulder.
7. Who killed Crystal and why?

Answer: Mel- because he was in love with Jason

Mel said he never initially intended to hurt Crystal, despite the fact that Crystal treated Jason and her unborn child poorly. When she verbally attacked him and then demanded he have sex with her (so he'd be allowed back in Hotshot), Mel slapped her as hard as he could (this time intending to kill her).

He assumed she was dead after he hit her, as he was a supe and stronger than human. She was not dead, though, and died after being crucified (though the crucifixion itself did not kill her, her injuries by Mel was the cause). Sookie later found out that it was fairies that crucified Crystal. Mel was immediately executed for what he'd done to Crystal.
8. Eric, at long last, revealed the story of his former life to Sookie. Which choice was NOT one factoid from his life before they met?

Answer: He'd been 40 years old when he was killed and vamped

He told Sookie his story, finally. He'd been considered a man at age twelve. He married his sister in law at age sixteen, after the death of his older brother. She'd had two children die with his brother, and then birthed six of Eric's babies. Four of those had lived, and Aude had died having the sixth one. That baby had died as well, and Eric later went in search of a new wife to help him raise his children.

It was on the trip to meet an available woman that he was killed and vamped. He'd been about 23 when he became a vampire. Eric was sired by a vampire named Appius Livius Ocella.

They spent many years together afterward. Eric told Sookie that the past hundred years of his existence had seen much interesting change.
9. While being tortured by Lochlan and Neave, Sookie found out several truths. Which choice IS one of the things she discovered from her captors?

Answer: They'd murdered her parents

Lochlan and Neave were brother and sister, lovers, and murderers. They pledged allegiance to Breandan and held power over the water. Sookie and Jason's kin, like Niall and Fintan, held power over the sky. This pair of incestuous murders had taken Fintan (Sookie and Jason's grandfather), their parents (who been assumed to be caught in a flood), and Crystal.

They'd found Crystal in Mel's truck and finished her off via the crucifixion. They doled out a mind bending amount of agony onto Sookie before her grandfather Niall came in and beheaded Lochlan.
10. After the last great fairy battle, who was left alive?

Answer: Niall

Niall arrived in time to save Sookie and transport her to a resting spot. They weren't there long before Breandan arrived, but enough time for Eric to heal Sookie's wounds considerably. That left her able to move when the final fight came down upon them. Bill killed Neave after Niall beheaded Lochlan. Then, with Tray's help distracting Breandan, Bill killed him as well. Eric and Bill survived the final battle, though Pam stated something that left us hanging on Eric's ultimate fate. A happily pregnant Claudine lost her life in the battle and went on to the Summerland. Clancy died, but lived on in Bill, whom he'd fed to keep alive. As they traveled back to Bon Temps, Eric told the group that Clancy lived on in Bill and Pam's cryptic words haunted me, "as you live on in Sookie".

Before the final battle, a saddened Niall reported to Sookie that he would be closing the door to Faery. Fairies would no longer be able to cross back onto Earth. Sookie would lose another family member. He left her with these words, "the vampire is not a bad man, and he loves you". She never had the chance to ask him which vampire he meant..
