Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Ordinarily, Ben, the main character, never would have had anything to do with a man like Madec. Why did Ben eventually give in and accept Madec's request to guide him through the desert?

Answer: Madec promised to give Ben enough money to pay for an entire semester at college

Ben's parents had died when he was young, so he was always in need of more money for college. Ben was 22 and was trying to get a degree in geology so he could work for an oil company.
2. After Madec forced him into the desert without any clothes, what important object did Ben find in the dead prospector's locked box?

Answer: A slingshot

The slingshot ended up saving Ben's life, as it allowed him to hunt small animals for a little bit of raw meat and it also allowed Ben to attack and subdue Madec toward the end. He also found some lead buckshot for the slingshot in the locked box.
3. Which of these did Ben use for foot protection while wandering the desert?

Answer: All of these

Foot protection was one of Ben's biggest problems while in the desert. From the start, the walk on the rough, stony ground tore his feet to shreds. He first found old bird nests in a dead cactus, but eventually those broke apart so he made crude sandals from the dead skin of a sotol plant. Finally, when all else failed, he used his own underwear for foot protection, which surprisingly gave him the least amount of comfort but made him less clumsy as he walked.
4. True or False: At one point, Ben's tongue was so swollen from dehydration that it blocked some of the air from entering through his nose.

Answer: True

The book said his tongue half clogged his nose, and that as he walked it throbbed with pain. His lips also had shreds of flesh hanging off them.
5. Where was Ben finally able to drink some water?

Answer: In a cave on a stone butte

Ben found the small pool of water in a cave on top of a stone butte he had climbed the night before. It had bird guano around it and had a musty taste, but to Ben it was delicious. He found it just hours before he died from dehydration.
6. What did Ben use for food while stranded in the desert?

Answer: Half cooked birds and lizards

Ben was able to hunt a few quail and a lizard using the slingshot he had found. At first he tried to eat them raw, but when he could not stomach that he cooked them as best as he could on a stone he had warmed in the sun.
7. How did Ben hide, allowing him to get behind Madec?

Answer: He buried himself in the sand until Madec had gone past him

At night Ben was able to climb down from the butte and bury himself in sand, making sure to cover all his tracks along the way. He put the rubber tubes from the slingshot in his mouth and ear in order to breathe and hear.
8. When Ben snuck behind Madec and got his gun back, what prevented him from using it?

Answer: The bolt was missing

His plan was to shoot Madec's gun and disable it, but when he went to load it he noticed a piece of the gun had been removed. The keys and rotor for the jeep were also in Madec's pocket. Ben decided that the only thing he could do now was to get Madec close and attack him with the slingshot. Ben did eventually take Madec to jail, but that's not why he did not use the gun.
9. How did Ben lure Madec within range of the slingshot?

Answer: He lit Madec's tent on fire

While Madec was trying to climb the butte to get at where he thought Ben was, Ben grabbed some matches from the car, put lantern fuel on a sleeping bag in the tent, and lit it on fire. His first idea was to honk the horn on the jeep, but all Madec had to do was grab his rifle and shoot Ben.
10. What did Doctor Saunders show the police interrogators that ended up saving Ben from going to jail?

Answer: Buckshot taken from Madec's wrist and the slingshot

I don't want to sum up the entire ending, but basically Madec had made it seem as if Ben had been threatening and torturing him, and pretty much everyone was believing him. But Madec also made the mistake of saying that Ben had shot him with the Hornet, so when the doctor produced the lead buckshot and slingshot, everyone knew Madec had lied.
