Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the beginning of the play, Bertoldino recites the story of the Quiņones brothers. How many are they?

Answer: 4

Bertoldino tells the story of how the four Quiņones brothers tried to assault a castle by themselves and died in the attempt. Bertoldino is a minstrel who is reciting doņa Aldonza Briones' story, and the Quiņones part is the ending of the story.
2. Don Mendo is the main character of the play. He's in love with a lady. What is her name?

Answer: Magdalena

Magdalena is the only daughter of don Nuņo. Don Mendo's desire to keep her reputation intact is what will make him to try to avenge himself. All in vain, because Magdalena is don Mendo's lover at the beginning of the play; then, she marries don Pero and, later, she becomes the king's lover while she is married to don Pero and tries to be Renato's lover.
3. Magdalena pretends to be in love with don Mendo, but she will marry don Pero. Why?

Answer: Don Pero is one of the king's friends and richer than don Mendo

Magdalena is dating don Mendo in secret when she discovers her father wants to marry her to don Pero. She is worried at first, but then she decides that don Pero would be a better husband for her because he is one of the king's best friends and has a lot of money.
4. How did don Mendo lose all his fortune?

Answer: Playing cards

He was playing "siete y media", a card game similar to blackjack. It's played with a Spanish deck. Each card has a value in points equal to its face value (Ace=1 point; 2=2 points...), except the figures, which have a value of a half point. The objective of the game is to get a number of cards with a value equal or less to 7 points and a half. If your points are above 7 and a half, you lose immediately.
5. Who is don Mendo's best friend?

Answer: Moncada

Moncada is the only one who knows the truth about don Mendo and he tries to help him in everything. First, he tries to convince don Mendo to tell the truth (that he didnīt steal the jewels and that he was dating Magdalena), but when Mendo refuses and is condemned, Moncada helps Mendo to run away.
6. Don Mendo is discovered when he's visiting Magdalena in her rooms, so she asks him to lie in order to protect her reputation. What does he say he was doing there?

Answer: He was stealing jewels

Magdalena has previously given him some of her jewels in order to pay his debts with them, so he says he was stealing them when he was discovered. Magdalena confirms this story because she thinks it is her best chance to marry don Pero. Don Mendo discovers Magdalena's betrayal and swears revenge.
7. Don Mendo should be executed as Magdalena requested, but Moncada saves him. On which day should he have been executed?

Answer: Tuesday 13

In Spain, the day of bad luck is Tuesday 13, not Friday 13. Don Mendo has been on prision for several months when he discovers that the day is Tuesday 13 and feels something bad is about to happen. And he's right. Magdalena wants him dead because don Pero suspects Magdalena and Mendo were lovers and, with him dead, don Pero will marry her.

At the end, Moncada changes don Mendo for a corpse and don Mendo runs away.
8. When don Mendo appears again in the play, he has changed his name. What is his new name?

Answer: Renato

Don Mendo pretends to be a minstrel named Renato (that means "reborn") to avenge himself. Nobody recognizes him except Moncada, who tries to help him without don Mendo knowing it. The plot gets more and more complicated when every woman present in the play (except doņa Ramirez) falls in love with Renato, including Magdalena (who doesn't recognize him until the end of the play) and the queen.
9. One of Renato's dancers is in love with him. What is her name?

Answer: Azofaifa

Azofaifa is a Muslim dancer who falls in love with Renato, not knowing that he is don Mendo. When she discovers it, she tries to kill Magdalena in order to help him with his revenge. She succeeds, and don Mendo gets angry because he cannot avenge his honor now, so Azofaifa says he can do it with her; don Mendo then kills Azofaifa with a dagger.
10. Which one of these characters doesn't die at the end of the play?

Answer: Moncada

Magdalena is cheating on don Pero with the king, so don Pero and don Nuņo challenge him to a duel; the king kills them both, first don Nuņo and then don Pero. Just then Azofaifa appears and accuses Magdalena of being the cause of the supposed death of don Mendo.

The king doesn't believe her at first, but, after consulting the dead father and husband of Magdalena with magic, he proclaims her guilty, so Azofaifa kills her. Then don Mendo appears and, frustrated at seeing everybody dead, he kills Azofaifa and then he kills himself after revealing Renato is actually don Mendo.
