This chess game is ordered by the Sultana Roxelana who is angered by the intrigues undertaken by both Francis Crawford and Sir Graham Reid Malett at her court in Constantinople or Stamboul. The Sultana decrees that each "piece" taken in the course of the chess game will be killed.

We do not really learn how young Lymond is until towards the end of Book 1. Although precociously brilliant, he does make mistakes and is affected deeply by these and losses / deaths of his sisters, friends and allies.

Lymond's birth date is November 1, 1526. He was 16 when taken prisoner, along with other Scots nobles, in the war against England and following this, was accused of betraying Scotland. "The Game of Kings" opens in 1547.
