Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This novel was published in 1988. What is the image on the bookjacket of the First Edition (hardcover)?

Answer: a bomb, wrapped in a Christmas package

In this novel, Kinsey's beloved apartment gets blown to smitherines by the murderer, who has an affection for bombs. The story takes place at Christmastime, Kinsey's most unhappy time of the year.
2. It's two days after Christmas and Kinsey is in her office, working on paperwork. What is the brand of her portable typewriter?

Answer: Smith-Corona

Throughout the novels, we hear about Kinsey's portable typewriter; she loves to be able to carry her life with her, and her portable typing machine allows her this freedom.
3. Kinsey has been assigned an investigation into an insurance claim for Wood/Warren, a local furnace manufacturing company. What was the claim for?

Answer: fire damage

Kinsey was given the file on the 23rd, three days after it was claimed, even though the file was marked "RUSH." It has sat on Darcy's desk for that amount of time. Kinsey immediately recognizes the name - she had gone to high school with the Wood family.
4. Kinsey gets a bizarre notice in the mail from her bank on the morning of the 27th. What does this notice say?

Answer: there was an $5,000 deposit made after hours

Kinsey receives the notice that a deposit had been made into her primary checking account; however, she knows that she did not make it. When she calls the bank, they offer her no information - as she puts it, "In my experience banks are the least helpful institutions on earth ..."
5. Unfortunately for Kinsey, she is accused of insurance fraud. To protect herself, she meets her her attorney, for whom she had once worked. He plays an important role in several of Kinsey's cases. What is his name?

Answer: Lonnie Kingman

Lonnie Kingman is a criminal lawyer, "... early forties, with a face like a boxer..." He certainly doesn't have good news for Kinsey - during their meeting he rattled off several crimes that she could be charged with - none of which she had actually committed. Kinsey decides that she is now into the Wood/Warren scandal more than she had ever wished, but she starts to investigate for her own sake.
6. Who is Andy Motycka?

Answer: a claims adjuster at California Fidelity

Kinsey has been framed by a network of people and she begins to assert part of the blame on Andy, who works for California Fidelity. It is widely known that Andy does not like Kinsey (the feeling is mutual) and would leap at the opportunity to slander her reputation.
7. After meeting with Helen, Ash, and Ebony Wood, Kinsey goes to McDonald's for dinner and then heads home. She becomes a bit depressed when she gets there, remembering that Henry is gone. Where did he go?

Answer: Michigan for the holidays

Kinsey brought Henry to the airport on the 23rd. Henry was traveling to Michigan to spend Christmas and New Year's with his family. Being the "baby" of the family, at the age of 81, he was looking forward to his trip, and wanted Kinsey to come along.
8. In Kinsey's digging, she finds a suspicious suicide from years back, that may be related to her own predicament. The name of the victim was Hugh Case and Kinsey wants to interrogate his widow, Lyda. What city does Lyda now live in?

Answer: Dallas

Kinsey tracks down Lyda fairly easily, although she did hit a few snags along the way. Lyda is none-to-happy to hear from Kinsey and slams the phone down on her ear twice! Finally, Kinsey decides to travel to Dallas to speak with her in person. "If I'd been working off an expense account, I'd have hired myself out to the Santa Teresa airport and jumped on a plane for Dallas. I can be pretty cavalier with someone else's money. My own, I think about first, as I'm very cheap."
9. Daniel Wade, one of Kinsey's ex-husbands, shows up totally unexpectedly on her doorstep one morning. She is not happy to see him - especially after only an hour's worth of sleep that night. He pleads with her to hold onto an item for him, as he has no safe place to store it. This item is crucial in the case. What is it?

Answer: his guitar

When Daniel appears, Kinsey's old feelings of hurt are rekindled. She acts harshly with him because she knows how much damage he caused her when he left, and is fearful that she will be hurt again. She finally agrees to help him out by storing his expensive acoustic guitar in a corner of her living room.
10. On New Year's Eve, Kinsey plans to attend a party. Sadly enough, a bomb explodes in a mail parcel, thus blowing the party's hostess to bits. Kinsey is terribly injured during the blast. Who is killed?

Answer: Olive

Olive invited Kinsey to her New Year's Eve party, because as she puts it, "... I am throwing this party so you can wear the damn thing," referring to a dress that she gave Kinsey. Kinsey meets Olive and Terry at their house to help get things ready. As Terry is winding a garden hose from the lawn, Olive and Kinsey are entering the house, to be sprayed with shrapnel from the bomb.
11. Where do Terry, Kinsey, and Lieutenant Dolan meet up, in hopes of getting a break on the case?

Answer: the bird refuge

Terry tells Kinsey that Lyda Case has been threatening his life, and when Olive is killed, it is assumed that Lyda is the bomber. Terry tells Kinsey that they are supposed to meet at the bird refuge at 6pm, so they all meet there, in the hopes of entrapping her and getting some answers. But, she never shows. We find out later that she was killed.
12. On January 3rd, Kinsey gets a call from Darcy at the office. What does she say?

Answer: Kinsey and Lance are going to be named co-conspirators in arson/insurance fraud

Darcy calls Kinsey around 9am to tell her that Mac turned all the information over to the D.A. and that both Kinsey and Lance were going to be named in the conspiracy. This was just moments after Lance had called her to tell her that he believed someone had bugged his office. As he said, "... someone is trying to make me look very bad."
13. What does Kinsey figure out when she returns to her apartment on January 3rd, after visiting with Lance at the Wood/Warren hydrogen furnace plant?

Answer: Daniel is involved in the case

Kinsey knows that Lance's office had been bugged, but she discovers that LONG before she gets home. And, indeed, her apartment is eventually destroyed by a bomb; that comes later. However, when she gets home from debugging Lance's office, her receiver starts squealing like crazy - and she finds a "bug" hidden in Daniel's guitar, which he had asked her to "store safely" for him.
14. Daniel was shacked up in a crummy motel with his lover when Kinsey finally found him. Who was his lover?

Answer: Bass

Kinsey is amazed to learn that Daniel was in love with Ashley's brother, Bass. It all falls into place when she sees them together -Daniel actually left Kinsey for Bass all those years ago. And, they were in cahoots with whomever was setting up Kinsey - they have the tapes from her apartment and plan to hand them over to the D.A. the following morning.
15. Here's the question of all questions: who was the killer?

Answer: Terry

Terry did it! In the final chapter, we learn that Terry was really Chris Emms, a killer who had murdered his mother, but gotten away with it through an insanity defense. He had escaped from a mental hospital, and changed identities. He was crazy - he killed Olive and Lyda - and tried to kill Kinsey, but instead died in the blast that leveled her apartment.
