Thingol's brother was Olwe. He became the leader of the Teleri after his brother's dissapearance at Nan Emloth, led most of his people to Aman and became the Prince of Alqualonde. His daughter, Earwen, married Finarfin, King Finwe's third son.

Thingol's wife was Melian. She was a Maia spirit, servant and helper of Vana and Este. She met Thingol at Nan Emloth and they fell in love with each other. They married and lived in Doriath, the Hidden Kingdom, which was protected from all enemies, with Melian's power. Thingol was the only Child of Iluvatar that was wedded to one of the Ainur, the holy spirits.

The name "Thingol", as well as the names "Singollo" and "Sindacollo" in Quenya, means "Grey-cloak". Elwe, was known as Elu Thingol, the Grey-cloak King. Perhaps, the word "Sindar", that means "the Grey Elves", comes from this name.

Thingol and his brother Olwe, were the leaders of the Teleri, the biggest elven race. When Thingol disappeared at Nan Emloth, Olwe led most of the Teleri to Aman. They were called Falmari. But some of the Teleri remained at Beleriand, searching for Thingol. They were named Eglath, the Abandoned Elves.

Thingol's sword was named Aranruth. Its name means "King's Wrath". It was saved from the destruction of Doriath and it was the sword of the Kings of Numenor.
