Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was Mrs. Lee?

Answer: A gypsy woman

She was a very frightening character. She kept warning the Rogers off the land. She was suspected of killing Ellie. She died herself a bit later in the story.
2. What is the total number of murders that took place in this story?

Answer: 4

Those 4 murders were the ones of Ellie, Claudia Hardcastle, Mrs. Esther Lee, and Greta Andersen. The four were committed by Michael Rogers, our beloved narrator.
3. How was "old chap" Ed killed?

Answer: He was stabbed several times

Actually, he had made some winnings in a certain "gambling place". He was a friend of Michael's in the military. A couple of roughs followed them and Ed was stabbed in the arm. However, Michael, being the sick individual he is, took the knife and repeatedly stabbed Ed in the stomach.
4. Who was "God"?

Answer: Major Phillpot

In the small quiet town, he was "God". He took quite a shine to Ellie and didn't dislike Michael a lot.
5. Claudia Hardcastle was poisoned with cyanide.

Answer: True

She wasn't the only one at that. Michael also murdered Ellie that way. However, Claudia's body was quickly recovered and the smell of cyanide was still there. In Ellie's case, she was dead for at least four hours before her body was recovered. By that time, the smell of cyanide had disappeared.
6. This is a part of a certain song that Ellie used to sing:
"Every Morn and every Night Some are born to Sweet Delight Some are born to Sweet Delight Some are born to _____ _______"

Answer: Endless Night

This is a very chilling poem. Just makes you wonder if Ellie did know all along...
7. Which one of these isn't really an uncle of Ellie's?

Answer: Uncle Reuben

Reuben was actually Ellie's cousin. She just got the habit of calling him uncle, while he never really was one.
8. What were Santonix's last words?

Answer: "Why didn't you go the other way?"

These were his last words on his deathbed. Michael always did sense that Santonix knew his secret. Santonix had warned Michael repeatedly, in a subtle way, about his actions. A poor, troubled, yet artistic soul he was.
9. How old was Ellie when she died?

Answer: 21

She had just separated from the annoyance and disturbance of her family. She had been free at last, until Greta and Michael got their rotten hands on her.
10. What was the date of Ellie's death?

Answer: September 17th

It was briefly mentioned in the story. Michael had woken up with a great sense of delight, feeling on top of the world. Major Phillpot, who accompanied him to an auction, warned him that usually the biggest disasters happen after the greatest of joys. He was right after all.
11. Into which American city did Michael venture after Ellie's death to witness the funeral and attend to some financial affairs?

Answer: New York

Michael sure experienced a lot of difficulties in his stay there. To quote him, "It was the jungle. I was out of my depth and I knew it. I wasn't the hunter; I was the hunted."
12. In the folly, the police found a woman's lighter which had a certain initial carved on it. This matter was brought up in the investigations following Ellie's death. What was that initial?

Answer: C

Many different possibilities were brought up as to who could have possibly owned that lighter. Cora and Claudia Hardcastle were first suspected for having the same initial. It wasn't discussed further in the story.
13. "_____ was the woman I belonged to. She was sex personified. I was mad for her, and I had to hold myself in." Who is this woman that Michael knew he belonged to?

Answer: Greta

He sure loved her... until he killed her. She helped him plan the whole thing. However, while remembering the events, Greta didn't matter. Ellie did, but Greta had no significant place in his head.
14. What's Ellie's real first name?

Answer: Fenella

Fenella Goodman, to be more precise. Michael noticed that she was a bit too apprehensive when she gave him her name. He considered the possibility that it wasn't her real name, but convinced himself that it was impossible that she would do such a thing.
15. So... who was the murderer?

Answer: Michael Rogers

I think I gave out a lot of hints during the quiz. Michael turned out to be quite the troubled fellow. In conclusion, this was a very brilliant story by Agatha Christie with a riveting conclusion. I hope you enjoyed the quiz!
