Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the beginning of this novel, we learn that Kinsey has gone through a major lifestyle. With whom is she now living?

Answer: Henry

Due to a bomb exploding at the end of her last case, Kinsey has been "forced" to move in with Henry. He is taking great delight in "remodeling" her old apartment, what's left of it at any rate! Kinsey frets about the new place: "My real worry was that Henry would make it too large or too opulent and I'd feel obliged to pay him accordingly."
2. Kinsey is hired by Royce Fowler and travels to his township to work. Where does he live?

Answer: Floral Beach

Royce Fowler and his daughter Ann meet with Kinsey in her office to discuss a potential case. Fowler's son, Bailey, had been imprisoned for murder, and had subsequentially escaped a few years later. He had been living with a new identity for years when he was picked up on a fluke. That is when the police learned of his real identity.
3. Whom is Bailey Fowler suspected of murdering?

Answer: Jean Timberlake

When Jean was in her senior year of high school, she was murdered and the number one suspect was Bailey. He was primarily suspected because he and Jean were dating and she became pregnant - with someone else's child. He never was found guilty - instead he pleaded out.
4. Mrs. Fowler has about two dozen ailments, all of which she lays out for Kinsey at their first meeting, at the Ocean Street motel. What disease is her primary illness?

Answer: diabetes

Kinsey is most assurdly not impressed with Mrs. Fowler when she enters the motel in Floral Beach. "... Mrs. Fowler was now propped up in the full-sized hospital bed ... she was wearing a white cotton hospital gown that tied down the back ... it struck me as curious that she'd affect such a garb when she could have worn a bed jacket or a gown and robe of her own." Mrs. Fowler tells Kinsey of her faltering health, and lists the causes, diabetes being foremost.
5. After dining with the Fowlers, Kinsey does a little investigating. When she first sees Shana she can hardly believe it's her; where are they?

Answer: Pearl's Pool Hall

Kinsey is given a tip from Ann Fowler that she can find Shana Timberlake (Jean's mother) at Pearl's Pool Hall. As Kinsey is sitting at the bar with Curtis Pearl, owner, he points out Shana to her: "... tall one likes to dance when she's feeling blue ... they just picked up the fellow killed her little girl a few years back."
6. What happens at Bailey's arraignment?

Answer: He escapes with the help of Tap

Kinsey and Mr. Fowler attend Bailey's arraignment for support. They have to sit through several other court appearances first, though. Finally, once it is time for his turn, Tap breaks into the courtroom, taking everyone by surprise, including Bailey.

He has a "loaded" shotgun and helps Bailey to escape. Unfortunately, Tap is shot dead by one of the gaurds and Kinsey discovers that his "loaded" gun was loaded with rock salt.
7. David Poletti had been a high school student with the deceased. Kinsey went to his office and questioned him - and learned a lot about the kind of person the deceased was. What kind of office did David Poletti have at this point?

Answer: dental

Dr. Poletti makes a funny comment to Kinsey: "... some of my patients are young girls her age ... they just seem so immature. I can't imagine them sexually active and yet I'm sure some of them are." Later in the interview he admits to once dating Jean, just to "get into her pants." Jean was a haunted girl, trying to feel loved, in all the wrong ways.
8. Kinsey discovers that someone broke into her room at the motel. She demands a room change, and finally Bert sends her to room 24. What happens to Kinsey at 2:47am in that new room?

Answer: Bailey calls her

After finally getting settled into her new room, she falls asleep. At quarter to 3 am, Bailey calls her to see how her case is going. They talk about several things; he insists that he had no idea Tap was going to break him out, he had given Jean his loot from his robberies for safe keeping, he believes that Jean had hid several thousand dollars at her work.

Unfortunately, their line is severed and the police are tipped that she was talking him and her night of sleep is over - she spends the next few hours talking with the police instead!
9. Who is Dwight Shales?

Answer: high school principal

Dwight Shales was the principal at Central Coast High School where Jean went to school. He is very helpful to Kinsey, and provides Jean's file for her inspection.
10. John Clemson provides Kinsey with some startling news - when Kinsey heard it "...a chill rippled down my back." With whom was the deceased having a hot, steamy affair?

Answer: Reverend Haws

Jack Clemson is Bailey's attorney. His son is the town's pharmacist at this point, and Kinsey questions him because she believes Jean and he had an affair. John discloses to her that he watched Jean and the Reverend have their flings every Wednesday at 4pm. He has since left the church as "... it turned out not to be the kind of comfort I was hoping for."
11. Pearl's son and daughter-in-law, Rick and Cherie, have been lying all this time about what time they saw Bailey with the victim. What time did Rick really see them?

Answer: 10pm

Rick was supposed to be watching his grandmother, but he left her home alone to go and see Cherie. Kinsey questioned the two of them, but because Pearl was with them, Rick wouldn't tell Kinsey the truth. When Kinsey went back to her hotel room, she found Cherie there, who told her the truth - Bailey and Jean were seen at 10pm, backing up Bailey's story.
12. Ann Fowler is Bailey's sister. What relationship did she have with the deceased?

Answer: high school guidance counselor

Ann is the primary care-giver for her parents, as well as the overseer of the hotel. In Chapter 20, Kinsey and Ann talk about her role with Jean, as a counselor. Ann says she tried not to encourage personal business to get involved with her 'counselor' role.
13. How does Ori Fowler die?

Answer: anaphylaxis

Ann injects Ori with insulin twice a day for her out-of-control diabetes. One morning, in the 21st Chapter, Kinsey is with the two women while this medical regimen is being administered. Only a minute after getting her injection, Ori begins to have symtpoms of an allergic reaction - and violently dies shortly thereafter of anaphylaxis. We learn later that Ann killed her purposefully.
14. Kinsey was on a rampage to find Shana - where was she "hiding out"?

Answer: the Sanctuary

Kinsey made several attempts to find Shana at her trailer, but she hadn't been there for days. By searching through her garbage, Kinsey found an invitation to the "Sanctuary." Kinsey finally realized that was an area of the mineral baths; she found Shana dead and stuffed in the shed to the hot tub.
15. Kinsey finally has it out with the real killer in her hotel room. Who is the serial killer?

Answer: Ann

Ann is the real killer - she murdered them all! She killed Jean because she was carrying Dwight's "love child." Ann killed Shana because she thought Shana was having an affair with Dwight. Ann also killed her mother, just to get her out of the way. Kinsey, luckily, managed to get away from it all - clearing Bailey's name in the process.
