Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Garth Nix has written many fantasy novels. His books "Lirael", "Abhorsen", and "Goldenhand" are part of which series?

Answer: Old Kingdom

The first book is "Sabriel", written in 1995. The next book, "Lirael", was written in 2001. In this series, the Abhorsen is a necromancer who makes sure that the dead stay dead. All other necromancers are enemies of the Abhorsen and seek to raise the dead for nefarious purposes.
2. Which 2013 fantasy novel by Helene Wecker combines elements of Jewish and Arab mythology?

Answer: The Golem and the Jinni

Wecker's novel, the first in a series, is about a jinni, who is trapped in human form, and a golem who meet in 19th century New York. Golems are from Jewish mythology and jinni come from Arab mythology. I made up the other titles.
3. Mermaids and other undersea denizens are a popular topic for fantasy. Which of these 21st century series is NOT about mermaids, sirens, or similar creatures?

Answer: Outlander

"Lost Voices" features girls who become mermaid-like creatures after committing suicide; like sirens, they use their songs to lure ships into crashing and sinking. The books of "Ingo" are about a sister and brother who discover that they're half Mer and can breathe underwater. In "Lies Beneath", a boy and his mermaid sisters live in Lake Superior and are out to avenge their mother's death.

"Outlander" is written by Diana Gabaldon. It is primarily historical drama, but features time travel: a woman from the 1940s is sent back in time to 18th century Scotland after touching standing stones.
4. The "Mistborn" series uses a magic system called allomancy. What do Mistings and Mistborn have to ingest to use their powers?

Answer: Metal

They swallow the metals and "burn" them to use various powers, like increasing senses or soothing emotions. Mistings can burn only one metal; Mistborn can use them all.
5. Who writes the series "Throne of Glass" and "A Court of Thorns and Roses"?

Answer: Sarah J. Maas

"Throne of Glass" concerns an assassin who becomes a King's Champion. In "A Court of Thorns and Roses", a girl kills a wolf and is whisked away to the Faerie lands, which suffer under a sadistic queen. The latter series has similarities to the fairy tale "East of the Sun and West of the Moon", in which a man is cursed and can only be freed by a woman's trust and love.
6. Lian Hearn's "Tales of the Otori" is set in a Japan-like fantasy world. Which of these is part of the series?

Answer: Across the Nightingale Floor

"Across the Nightingale Floor" (2002) was the first book written in the series, though "Heaven's Net Is Wide" (2007) takes place earlier. The main character is Otori Takeo, who seeks to avenge his adopted father and lead the Otori clan.
7. "Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell" follows the reintroduction of magic to Europe in the 19th century. It's set during which war?

Answer: Napoleonic Wars

The men of the title use magic in different ways. Norrell does magic by the book and tries to use it against Napoleon, while Strange is drawn to the wilder side of magic. Susanna Clarke's book was adapted into a miniseries in 2015.
8. Nnedi Okorafor's "Who Fears Death" takes place in a post-apocalyptic version of what country?

Answer: Sudan

The protagonist is Onyesonwu, whose name means "Who Fears Death". She learns to use her psychic powers as she travels an Earth whose oceans have boiled away. A sequel, "The Book of Phoenix", explains how this world came to be.
9. Robert Jordan died in 2007 before finishing his epic fantasy series "The Wheel of Time". Which author of "Elantris" and "Mistborn" finished the series based on Jordan's outlines?

Answer: Brandon Sanderson

Jordan had intended to write only one final book to wrap up everything, even if publishers had to invent a new kind of paper or binding to contain the entire work. Instead, Sanderson needed three books, published between 2009 and 2013, to complete the opus. The title Jordan planned to give the twelfth and final book, "A Memory of Light", was instead applied to the fourteenth.
10. Steven Erikson completed his epic series "The Malazan Book of the Fallen" in 2011. What is the "divine" title of the final book?

Answer: The Crippled God

The first book, "Gardens of the Moon", was published in 1999. "The Crippled God" is the tenth and last book in the millennia-spanning series, although other books have been published that take place in the same universe.
