Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the most recent novel that Thomas Covenant had written when Linden Avery enters his life at the beginning of "The Wounded Land"?

Answer: "Or I Will Sell My Soul for Guilt"

Covenant is a successful novelist. His last novel explored the idea that innocence is impotent, and that only the guilty are powerful. "That Beauty and Truth Shall Not Pass Utterly" is a phrase from the "First Chronicles" associated with Kevin Landwaster. "The Sun is my Enemy" is the name of a book by Henrietta Aladjem about her struggles with chronic illness. In the "Second Chronicles", the people of the Land certainly had reason to regard the sun as their enemy.
"Leprosy, I'm Not Half the Man I Used to Be" is a parody of a line from the Beatles song "Yesterday"!
2. Throughout the "Second Chronicles", why are the people of the land afraid to enter Andelain, in spite of its beauty and loveliness?

Answer: People have gone mad after meeting the spirits of the dead there

Andelain is the heart of the Land, and the only part of it that successfully resists the Sunbane. Andelain is a place of great natural beauty but the people of the Land cannot understand how it can resist the Sunbane. Since the advent of the Sunbane, human sacrifice has been practised in the Land.

When people enter Andelain, spirits of dead people they have known appear to them. The few people who have since dared to enter Andelain have been driven mad by feelings of guilt and remorse upon being confronted with dead relatives they have allowed to be killed. Covenant first learns these things in "The Wounded Land."
3. In "The Wounded Land", Covenant is poisoned with magical venom for the first time by what method?

Answer: Bitten by a creature with snakes in place of arms

A man named Nassic is punished for committing a murder by being exposed to the first rays of the Sunbane, causing him to undergo a transformation into a monstrous creature with snake-arms. Nassic attacks Covenant and injects him with a magical venom. This is part of Lord Foul's plan to unbalance Covenant, as the venom causes Covenant to become delirious and to lose control of his wild magic, with dangerous consequences. Covenant is repeatedly attacked by venomous creatures during the trilogy, including a spider, bees, and poisonous rats.
4. Near the end of "The Wounded Land" Covenant and his companions meet the giants of the Search in Sarangrave Flat. Soon afterwards they are menaced by what creatures?

Answer: Skest, creatures made of acid

The skest are servants of the Lurker of the Sarangrave and try to force Covenant and his party into the waters of the swamp, so the Lurker can capture them. The Sur-jheherrin rescue the party, as they are able to neutralise the skest with their muddy bodies. Sunbane-warped cavewights and flying poisonous insects menace Covenant's party elsewhere in the Land.
5. Why was Findail, the appointed of the Elohim who first appears in "The One Tree", such a misery guts?

Answer: He had a doom placed upon him that would cost him his independent existence

Throughout the ages of the Land, the Elohim have responded to crises threatening the earth by appointing one of their number to meet the peril. On a number of such occasions, the appointed one has sacrificed his or her own being, e.g., when one was bound into the Colossus of the Fall to protect the Land's forests from Ravers. Findail was full of self-pity and desperately tried to avoid his fate but was ultimately unsuccessful.
6. In "The One Tree", why did the Haruchai want to punish Linden?

Answer: Because she tried to kill one of them while in a trance

Covenant was put into a trance state by the Elohim. Linden was able to release Covenant, but in the process she transferred the trance state onto herself. During a subsequent battle, one of the Haruchai, who was wounded, appealed to Linden for help. Being in a confused, quasi-psychotic state, she attempted to kill him instead.

When she recovered, the surviving Haruchai wished to punish her, but Covenant forbade them.
7. In "The One Tree" and "White Gold Wielder", why were the Elohim, Findail in particular, so determined to destroy Vain, the ebon creature created by the ur-Viles and presented to Covenant in "The Wounded land"?

Answer: They believed that Vain was designed to entrap one of the Elohim in order to create a new Staff of Law.

The original Staff of Law had been destroyed during the events of the "First Chronicles", described in "The Illearth War". Its destruction weakened the earth and made it possible for Lord Foul to create the Sunbane. The Elohim first try to imprison Vain during the events of "The One Tree" but he escapes. Near the end of "White Gold Wielder", Findail tries to shove Vain into a pit of lava that will destroy him.

However, Vain seizes hold of Findail, who is unable to break his grip. Later on Linden uses her powers to merge Vain and Findail into one, and they are transformed into a new Staff of Law, which Linden was able to use to heal the Land of the ravages of the Sunbane.
8. When did Thomas Covenant and Linden Avery first become physically intimate?

Answer: After Covenant defends Linden from the Haruchai, after leaving Brathairealm

Covenant develops feelings for Linden early on in the story, but it is only after defending Linden from the Haruchai in "The One Tree" that Covenant tells her of his love for her. They then become lovers, enjoying some happiness while they can.
9. During the events of "The One Tree" why does the gaddhi of Brathairealm insist that Hergrom of the Haruchai be punished by Kasreyn of the Gyre?

Answer: Hergrom killed one of the hustin, the gaddhi's inhuman servants

Although the gaddhi is the nominal ruler of the Brathair, Kasreyn holds all the real power. The gaddhi has a sentimental attachment to the hustin guards, as he thinks they are the only things he owns (although even this is not really true). When one of them is killed, the gaddhi is enraged and demands vengeance. Kasreyn is happy to oblige, as the Haruchai have defied his power.
10. At the climax of "White Gold Wielder" why did Linden finally allow Covenant to give Lord Foul his white gold ring, even though she knew that Lord Foul was planning to destroy the world with it?

Answer: She had promised to trust Covenant and believed that possessing him would be a greater evil

Linden is not aware of Covenant's reasons for surrendering his ring to Lord Foul. When he attempts to give Foul the ring, she initially attempts to stop him by using her power to take possession of him. Covenant gives her a soulful look, reminding her that she had promised to trust him, and she relents. Lord Foul then kills Covenant and attempts to break the Arch of Time and destroy the world.

However, Covenant reappears in spirit form, interposing himself between Lord Foul and the Arch, protecting it from Foul's attacks. Foul exhausts his own substance attacking Covenant and fades away, and the Land is saved once more.
