Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When Xeones had his near death experience at Thermopylae, which god appeared to him?

Answer: Apollo

One of the first things which Xeones tells Xerxes and his comrades is about this near death experience, in which Apollo, the Archer, appears to him. Apollo also appears to Xeones when he is in the mountain wilderness with Bruxieus and Diomache.
2. Which of the following disabilities did Bruxieus, the slave to Xeones as a child, have?

Answer: He had poor vision.

According to Xeones, this was Bruxieus' only weakness and it was the only reason why Xeones felt valuable when he was around him.
3. After Alexandros neglects his shield, which of his body parts does Polynikes injure with the swinging of a tripod?

Answer: His nose

Afterwards, Polynikes remarks "'Your nose was too pretty, son of Olympieus. It was a girl's nose...I like it better now.'"
4. Bruxieus wanted Xeones to go to Sparta, where he could become a great warrior.

Answer: False

Bruxieus insisted that Xeones and Diomache go to Athens, which was the freest and most civilized city in Hellas. Diomache did end up going to Athens; however, Xeones decided that he wanted to go to Sparta instead.
5. When Arete addressed the crowd while standing up for Rooster, Harmonia, and most of all their baby boy, all of whom were captured by the krypteis, which of the following did she NOT say?

Answer: "If you think I am going to stand by and watch you perform your awful deeds because I am a woman, you obviously have little experience with Spartan women."

This was a courageous, admirable, and an all-around amazing performance by Arete in which she saved the life of Rooster's baby, although it ended up costing Dienekes his life.
6. From what country is the marine Ptammitechus, or "Tommie", whom the Spartans encounter multiple times?

Answer: Egypt

Tommie is referred to multiple times as the "Egyptian marine".
7. According to Dienekes, what is the oposite of fear?

Answer: Love

Dienekes tells this to Xeones while they are at Thermopylae.
8. Why did Leonidas choose the men he did for the 300?

Answer: Because of the valor of their women

Leonidas told Paraleia, "I chose them not for their own valor, lady, but for that of their women."
9. Which of the following characters does not die in this book?

Answer: Rooster

When the historian, who is the narrarator of this book, was captured long after the battle at Thermopylae was over, it was his knowledge of Rooster and the other Spartans which saved his life. While captured, the historian actually ecountered and spoke with Rooster.
10. Who, most likely, was the woman among the Spartan party who was said to have lingered the longest while visiting the Hot Gates after the battle there was over?

Answer: Diomache

"'Her face was hidden,' the ship's master declared. 'All but her eyes obscured by a veil.'"
According to this description, we can assume that this woman was Diomache, cousin to Xeones, who lived in Athens at the sanctuary of Persephone of the Veil.
