quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. By the end of hate week, who was Oceania at war with?

Answer: Eastasia

Oceania was originally at war with Eurasia. By the end of hate week, the enemy had changed to Eastasia. The people of Oceania are led to believe that the enemy is and always has been Eastasia.
2. What kind of government is described in the book?

Answer: A totalitarian government

Totalitarian governments are ones where the state regulates the aspects of public and private life. Orwell wrote "1984" with Stalinist Russia and Nazi Germany in mind, both considered totalitarian.
3. By the end of the novel, what do we know about Winston's wife Katherine?

Answer: We learn nothing more about her.

Other than when she was first mentioned and described, we learn nothing about what had become of Winston's gruesome wife. Winston despised her because she was too submissive and blind to the government's control.
4. The Proles mentioned in the novel make up roughly what percentage of the population?

Answer: 85%

2% consist of the Inner Party. 13% consist of the Outer Party. The remaining 85% are the Proles. The proles are the lowest caste of Oceania.
5. London is the capital of what province?

Answer: Airstrip One

Airstrip One is a province of Oceania. London is its capital. Oceania consists of England, The Americas, and Australia. Eastasia consists of Eastern Asian countries such as China, Japan, and southeast countries such as Thailand.
6. What is the point of the never-ending war with Eurasia and Eastasia?

Answer: to spend any surplus production on the war.

By lowering the standards of living of the people, higher thinking (thinking above necessity) is abolished, and thus the party has control of invention and innovation. This keeps Oceania in its stagnant state, so that any innovation at all must come from the inner party's highest officials.
7. The Proles, because of their extremely low-standards of living, have to be the most controlled class because of their likelihood to start a revolution.

Answer: False

The Proles, because of their low living standards, possess little innovative thinking. There is no need to control them as tightly as the outer party (the middle class is most likely to start a revolution). The proles are, in fact, the most liberated class.
8. What is the main purpose of the Ministry of Truth?

Answer: to make everything the party says true.

Winston works at the Ministry of Truth, in its records department. Its newspeak name is "Minitrue".
9. According to the Appendix section of the novel, which of these words is classed as Vocabulary B?

Answer: Crimethink

The B vocabulary consists of words constructed for political purposes in both everyday physical and mental form. The vocabulary is completely made up of noun-verbs which can have suffixes to integrate them into other parts of speech. "Goodthink", for example, becomes an adverb by adding -wise. "Goodthinkwise". "Speedful" and "ungood" are the everyday words, or A vocabulary.

These words replace many multiple words. "Knife", for example, also means cut. "Ingsoc" is C vocabulary, which is used to describe scientific and technical terms.

Ingsoc, in fact, replaces the word "science".
10. What happens in the last chapter of the book?

Answer: Winston and Julia are brainwashed and are reintegrated into society.

The bullet mentioned at the end of the novel is figurative, "killing" the old Winston who opposed the party and believed in individual freedom. He is not actually killed in the end. Thanks for taking this quiz. :)
