Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Book two starts out in the primary hidden colony buried underneath the south polar ice cap. What is the name of this colony?

Answer: Zygote

The name of the main hidden colony is Zygote. At the start of the book the Martian rebels have been defeated and are scattered throughout the far southern hemisphere. The Zygote colony was the first hidden colony created by Hiroko, the primary agricultural specialist from the original 100 colonists.
2. According to the book, children born on Mars tend to be short and stocky compared to their Earth counterparts.

Answer: False

Children born on Mars tend to be taller due to the much lower gravity on Mars. They also have much better agility in the Martian climate.
3. What term is used to refer to the revolutionary groups in hiding on the planet Mars that resist most of the Earth controlled terraforming, and prefer to leave Mars nearest its natural state?

Answer: The Reds

Throughout the book the term "The Reds" is commonly applied to the various revolutionary groups. Ann Clayborne, the anti-terraforming member of the first 100, becomes their primary leader. "The Greens" is sometimes used for people who are pro-terraforming because of their wanting to introduce plant-life to Mars.
4. Sax Russell go's undercover and gets an opportunity to see what has been and what is currently going on with terraforming, which is now under the control of the transnational corporations. What does he find disturbing?

Answer: The transnational corporations are destructively terraforming the surface.

Sax Russell was the lead scientist of the first 100 involved in the terraforming efforts. Sax uses methods such as introducing new Mars resistant plant species, as well as hydration of the surface to slowly increase the atmospheric pressure and temperature for human viability.

The transnational corporations took over when he was forced into hiding and are now using methods devastating to the surface of Mars and to the original terraforming effort. These methods include the use of high energy lasers that break up the surface of Mars into a molten lava that create canals, and introducing heat into the atmosphere.
5. While undercover, Sax Russell is captured and interrogated by transnational police. During the rescue operation by Coyote and Maya, which member of the original hundred colonists does Maya kill?

Answer: Phyllis Boyle

While undercover, Sax Russell, who has had reconstructive surgery, has an affair with old coworker Phyllis Boyle. Unknown to Sax, she has figured him out and later he is captured by transnational police. He is held in a medical facility where he is interrogated with drugs and nearly killed. During the rescue attempt, Maya recognizes Phyllis and kills her with a grenade to avenge the destruction caused by her in connection with the transnational forces during the revolutionary war of 2061.
6. The interrogations of Sax Russell gives the transnationals the location of the colony under the southern ice cap. What is the result of the transnational attack on the colony?

Answer: Colonists detonate the ice dome and escape through tunnels

The colonists see the transnationals ahead of time, and bring down the ice dome after they have entered the colony. The colonists are able to escape through ice tunnels, and then prepare to meet with the other revolutionary groups including the Reds and the Bogdanovists at the hidden colony of Dorsa Brevia.
7. What is the name of the site where the different groups of rebels meet to sign a treaty of alliance in opposing the transnational groups?

Answer: Dorsa Brevia

The treaty of Dorsa Brevia sets various agreements between the various Martian groups on terraforming, revolution against the transnationals, as well as ideas for a future independent Martian government.
8. During the planning of the revolution, Maya goes to work on a project that is slowly creating a new sea on Mars. Where is the location of this project?

Answer: Hellas Basin

The Hellas Basin was a low area created by an impact with an asteroid early in Mars history. The terraformers have located several aquifers surrounding this basin and have been slowly draining them into Hellas, which is now a slowly growing ice sea. The project also includes the introduction of krill and other sealife into the sea as environmental conditions allow.

There is also, in conjunction, a project in the northern lowlands that is creating an ocean in the north that will completely surround Mars.
9. What event do Maya, Sax and the rest of the leaders use as a "trigger point" for the full scale start of the second revolution on Mars?

Answer: Breakup of the West Antarctic ice sheet on Earth

The breakup of the West Antarctic ice sheet, due to a volcanic eruption, is estimated to raise sea levels up to six meters. This will displace hundreds of millions of people on Earth living in coastal areas. The leaders of the Mars revolutionary's use this distraction as the "trigger point" to start the second revolution, in which they immediately attack transnational satellites with surface to space missiles, as well as begin the attack on ground security forces.
10. During the final standoff in the tent city of Burroughs, a dike is breached by a Marsfirst extremist group. How are the leaders able to get the people to safety?

Answer: They walk to the nearest town with CO2 blocking masks

All of the terraforming efforts have now given Mars a marginal enough atmosphere for the inhabitants to barely tolerate the low air pressure, and cold temperatures. They are able to wear masks that filter the CO2 in the atmosphere, and walk to the nearest tent city. Even with the masks, many of the people get altitude sickness from the low air pressure, and some CO2 poisoning as well, but as the book ends Mars is becoming closer to resembling an Earth-like planet.

The leaders now look to make Mars an entity separate from Earth.
