Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Howard Roark laughed."

Answer: The Fountainhead (Ayn Rand)

It's great when a single line can sum up the entire essence of a character. If you've never read "The Fountainhead", I highly recommend picking it up. Be careful though, you might just walk away from it with an entirely new view on life.
2. "When he was nearly thirteen, my brother Jem got his arm broken badly at the elbow."

Answer: To Kill A Mockingbird (Harper Lee)

This is a great opening sentence, because it is a continuation of the last chapter of the book.
3. "It was love at first sight. The first time Yossarian saw the chaplain he fell madly in love with him."

Answer: Catch-22 (Joseph Heller)

This is possibly one of the funniest books I have ever read.
4. "Many years later, as he faced the firing squad, Colonel Aureliano Buendia was to remember that distant afternoon his father took him to discover ice."

Answer: One Hundred Years of Solitude (Gabriel Garcia Marquez)

This is one of those books I had to reread the second I had finished it the first time.
5. "Then there was the bad weather."

Answer: A Moveable Feast (Ernest Hemingway)

Hemingway is the master of the bare-bones sentences. So plain, yet so descriptive at the same time.
6. "I am living at the Villa Borghese. There is not a crumb of dirt anywhere, nor a chair misplaced. We are all alone here and we are dead."

Answer: Tropic of Cancer (Henry Miller)

Even though I was not a fan of this book as a whole, some of the passages are so well written that I can't pass by them without highlighting them.
7. "When I was three and Bailey four, we had arrived in the musty little town, wearing tags on our wrists which instructed- "To Whom It May Concern"- that we were Marguerite and Bailey Johnson Jr., from Long Beach, California, en route to Stamps, Arkansas, c/o Mrs. Annie Henderson."

Answer: I know Why The Caged Bird Sings (Maya Angelou)

Another great book that I have read over and over again.
8. "How is it possible to bring order out of memory? I should like to begin at the beginning, patiently, like a weaver at his loom. I should like to say, 'This is the place to start; there can be no other."

Answer: West With The Night (Beryl Markham)

Hemingway once said that Beryl Markham wrote so well that he was completely ashamed of himself as a writer. I couldn't agree more.
9. "There lived not long since, in a certain village of La Mancha, the name whereof I purposely omit, a gentleman of their calling that used to pile up in their halls old lances, halberds, morions, and such other armours and weapons."

Answer: Don Quixote (Cervantes)

I can't provide any interesting information here. I'm too busy tilting at windmills....
10. "In the midway of this our mortal life, I found myself in a gloomy wood, astray, gone from the path direct."

Answer: The Divine Comedy (Dante)

The full panorama of all the horrific possibilities of agony and pain are contained within the bindings of this classic masterpiece.
