"And he Built a Crooked House" was first published in "Astounding Science Fiction" magazine, in February 1941. It also appeared in the collection "The Unpleasant Profession of Jonathan Hoag" published in 1959.
It is set in Laurel Canyon, Hollywood, California, where apparently they "keep the violent cases"...
