Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "The Great Gatsby", what is the name of Nick Carraway's cousin, who also happens to be the object of Jay Gatsby's affection?

Answer: Daisy Buchanan

Daisy Buchanan is Nick's cousin and is married to Tom Buchanan. Gatsby's unrequited love proves to be his undoing, for the Buchanans are very vain and selfish people. Jordan Baker is the woman who Nick is in love with, and Myrtle Wilson is the woman with whom Tom is having an affair.
2. What is the official language of Oceania in "1984"?

Answer: Newspeak

Newspeak is the official language of Oceania, and is designed to make the ideological premises of Ingsoc (Newspeak for English Socialism, the Party's official political alignment) the only expressible doctrine. The old way of speaking is refered to as Oldspeak.
3. What is the surname of the poorest family in Maycomb County in the book "To Kill A Mockingbird"?

Answer: Ewell

Bob Ewell and his abused daughter Mayella are the outcasts of Maycomb county. In the novel, Mayella accuses a black man, Tom Robinson, of raping her, when this is not the truth. The Ewells represent the darker side of the south with their ignorance and pure unadulterated racism.
4. In "The Handmaid's Tale", what color are the robes of the wives?

Answer: Blue

The Handmaids wear red robes, to represent their fertility, as well as their sexual sin. The Marthas wear green robes, and the Wives wear blue.
5. In "Of Mice And Men", George promised Lenny they would own their own farm and Lenny could have his own animals to tend to. What animal did Lenny want the most?

Answer: Rabbits

Lenny mentions various animals that will be on their farm, but he always goes back to the rabbits. When he asks George to tell the story of the farm, he always reminds him not to forget that Lenny will "tend the rabbits".
6. In "The Scarlet Letter", what letter was Hester Prynne assigned to wear as a result of her infidelity?

Answer: A

A represents adultery, as Hester becomes pregnant when her husband is away at sea. The letter is meant to shame Hester, but it becomes an important part of her identity.
7. British socialite Lady Brett Ashley is the object of American Jake Barnes' love in which Ernest Hemingway novel?

Answer: The Sun Also Rises

"The Sun Also Rises" tells of American Jake Barnes and his group of friends in Europe. Some of these friends are expatriates looking for a good time, and then there is Brett. Brett loves Jake, but she refuses to be with him because it will mean she has to give up sex. With this novel, Hemingway is commenting on the meaningless and unfulfilling lives of the war generation, often called the Lost generation.
8. In "The Picture of Dorian Gray", what is the name of the artist who paints Dorian's portrait?

Answer: Basil Hallward

The man who paints the portrait is also murdered by Dorian later in the book.
9. "The Catcher in the Rye" got its title from which poet's work?

Answer: Robert Burns

The protagonist in the novel, Holden Caufield, remembers a Robert Burns poem he once read and dreams of it often. Holden incorrectly believes the poem says "if a body catch a body coming through the rye", but it actually says "if a body meet a body". Nevertheless, Holden dreams of becoming a catcher in the rye, which is a person who catches children before they fall off of a cliff.
10. This book tells the tale of a legendary warrior who defeats a series of monsters in his life before his demise. Another book was written about one of the monsters, Grendel.

Answer: Beowulf

The warrior Beowulf comes to Denmark to save the people from the monster Grendel who has been terrorizing the city. Beowulf kills Grendel, then his mother, and lives on to become king. He meets his end after killing a dragon, which was guarding a legendary treasure.
