Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Nutrimatic invariably produces a substance that is almost, not quite, entirely unlike what?

Answer: Tea

In the second book, Arthur gets frustrated and teaches the Nutrimatic how to make tea, thus tying up all the ship's circuits so it won't respond to any other commands.
2. What planet is located in the uncharted backwaters of the unfashionable end of the Western spiral arm of the Galaxy?

Answer: Earth

Yes, our very own insignificant little blue-green planet! From the Prologue to the first book.
3. What is the first word of the Prologue?

Answer: Far

"Far out in the uncharted backwaters of the unfashionable end of the Western spiral arm of the Galaxy is an insignificant little blue- green planet..." etc etc.
4. According to the Vogon captain, why does he write poetry?

Answer: To throw his mean, heartless exterior into sharp relief

Vogon poetry is, of course, the third worst in the known Universe.
5. When Arthur learns the earth has been demolished, and he says he's a bit upset, what is Ford's response?

Answer: Yes, I can understand that

It takes Ford a minute to see Arthur's way of thinking. Apparently Ford didn't like Earth much.
6. Who said the following: "We demand rigidly defined areas of doubt and uncertainty!"

Answer: Philosophers

"We are Philosophers!" "Although we may not be..." They said this while arguing that a mere machine (Deep Thought) should not be allowed to figure out the Answer.
7. Who had the following thought: "Oh no, not again."

Answer: A bowl of petunias

Adams conjectures that if we knew why the Petunias thought this, we would know a lot more about the Universe than we do now. Of course, he contradicts this in his third book when we learn more about the story behind the petunias.
8. Why does Zaphod have three arms?

Answer: He had it fitted to improve his ski-boxing

We learn this in the first chapter that Zaphod appears in.
9. What happened to the cops' spaceship when Marvin explained his view of the Universe to it?

Answer: It committed suicide

Luckily, this also killed the cops who were shooting at Zaphod and company, thus saving their lives. Probably just an oversight on Marvin's part...
10. What is Arthur's main concern when both his arms fall off?

Answer: How he will operate his digital watch

Don't worry, Arthur gets his arms back again.
11. Who said the following: "Late, as in the late Dentarthurdent. It's a sort of threat, you see. I've never been very good at them myself, but I'm told they can be very effective."

Answer: Slartibartfast

He gets Arthur's name wrong because of the way Arthur introduces himself. It must be a British thing- sort of like Bond, James Bond.
12. What, apparently, was Ford's definition of the word "safe" that Arthur felt was dubious?

Answer: on one of the spaceships of the Vogon Constructor Fleet

Arthur's response to this is, "this is obviously some strange usage of the word 'safe' that I wasn't previously aware of."
13. Why did Arthur have nothing to worry about when nervously prodding a mattress from Squornshellous Zeta?

Answer: Very few have ever come to life again

According to the third book, all mattresses are named Zem.
14. For how long was Ford stuck on Earth?

Answer: 15 years

He is furious when he discovers Zaphod just "stopped in" on Earth without knowing Ford was there.
15. OK, here's a freebie- who said the following: "Life- loathe it or ignore it, you can't like it."

Answer: Marvin

Marvin the Paranoid Android was fitted with a new feature- GPP: Genuine People Personality.
