Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Frederick Douglass has a speaking engagement in St Louis. Which famous character does he have a short conversation with at the end of his speech?

Answer: Ulysses Grant

Former US General Grant, who still seems to have a fondness for alcohol in this alternate history, attended the speech and expressed his regret for the USA losing the second war of secession.
2. The looting of which US mining town persuaded Apache chief Geronimo to join Jeb Stuart in the war out west?

Answer: Contention City

It was decided that this city should be attacked because of the silver and gold production there which would help the Confederate War effort. Geronimo showed a very astute understanding of the situation and wanted to give the USA a couple of licks.
3. Samuel Clemens wrote for the "Alto Californian" newspaper

Answer: False

He was a writer for the "Morning Call" - which was vehemently against Mayor Sutro, whereas the Alto was very pro.
4. Alfred von Schlieffen was part of the German attaché to the USA. Who was his French counterpart, a fellow Franco-Prussian war veteran?

Answer: Foch

The two acknowledged each other at a diplomatic meeting just after the outbreak of hostilities. Foch was declared persona non grata at the meeting owing to the pro-CSA tendencies of France together with the British military attaché who deigned not to attend. Schlieffen said that the Germans could arrange for their transportation out of the country, which I'm sure gave him perverse pleasure.
5. Whilst Schlieffen was watching his French and British counterparts being expelled from Washington, we see a character from the Great War trilogy and the American Empire trilogy for the first time in a brief aside. She is almost knocked down by Schlieffen's horse. Who is she?

Answer: Nellie Jacobs

Although her surname isn't revealed, we know Nellie is of that age during this time, her mother uses her first name when telling her off and she certainly is a native of Washington.
6. Where is Colonel Virgil Earp captured?

Answer: New Mexico

Without his brother Wyatt in this scene, the Colonel falls to a CSA/Apache ambush which all but clears out US forces in New Mexico for the time being and is a great morale boosting victory for the CSA.
7. Abraham Lincoln is trapped in Utah for the majority of the war. However, President Blaine doesn't want him there and gives him a choice to go either north Idaho, or south to New Mexico. Alexander Pope and Gerorge Custer bet on the outcome of Lincoln's choice. Pope wins the bet because Lincoln elects to travel in which direction?

Answer: north

Custer was adamant, according to Pope, that Lincoln would travel south. President Blaine put a travel restriction on Lincoln as he was responsible for many a riot whilst speaking out on the rights of the working man. However, Lincoln travels to Montana and sparks a riot in Helena.
8. Future US Socialist President Hosea Blackford and Abraham Lincoln had a conversation on the train which Blackford says was the turning point in his life. Where was Blackford living at the time?

Answer: Oriska

Hosea Blackford was a miner and happened to hear Lincoln speak in Helena which sparked a riot there. Lincoln was heading for Chicago and a fateful meeting which would irrecovably split the Republican party.
9. The Gatling Guns helped drive the British from Montana back into Canada. Which character didn't make it out alive from that battle?

Answer: Tom Custer

Tom Custer perishes at the battle. However, the US forces can't exploit their victory as President Blaine called for a ceasefire the previous day which was accepted. Needless to say Custer takes up smoking, drinking and cursing full time again despite his promises to Libbie, his wife.
10. One of the Confederates also dies in the book - which one?

Answer: Jeb Stuart

In a spat between the Apache warriors and the Mexican-Confederates, the army is forced to intervene and Jeb Stuart takes a bullet to the gut. The son and grandson of Jeb Stuart proves no less controversial than the general - but that's to come later.
