Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The honourary title "Ser" is given only to those who have achieved this special status:

Answer: Knighthood

In our own world, we call a knight "Sir". There does not seem to be a female equivalent. Podrick Payne, who squires for the female knight Brienne of Tarth, generally calls her "Ser... My lady... Ser..."
2. The phrase "Valar Morghulis" is often heard around the Free City of Braavos. What does it mean?

Answer: All men must die

Arya Stark learns this High Valyrian phrase from Jaqen H'ghar; when she arrives in Braavos, she discovers that the traditional response is "Valar Dohaeris", which means "All men must serve".
3. To the Dothraki people, "khal" means a warlord, the head of a band of horseback warriors called a "khalasar". What is the female counterpart of a khal?

Answer: Khaleesi

Until Daenarys Targaryen came along, a khaleesi was nothing like a khal; she was only the khal's wife, and when he died, she retired to become a member of the group of widows known as the Dosh khaleen. However, Daenarys changed the traditional role when her husband Khal Drogo died and she became a leader of a khalasar in her own right.
4. How should you refer to an inhabitant of the city of Qarth?

Answer: Qartheen

Qarth is the first inhabited city that Daenarys enters with her khalasar in "A Clash of Kings", and it's a rich and opulent place. After having crossed the desert in conditions of extreme hardship, she "felt shabby and barbaric as she rode past them in her lionskin robe".
5. If a "septon" is a holy man and a "septa" is a holy woman, what's a "sept"?

Answer: A place of worship or temple

There are septs all over Westeros dedicated to the worship of "The Seven" (such as the Great Sept of Baelor in King's Landing). However, not all religions use them. For example, people from the northern regions visit a carved weirwood tree in a grove to worship the "Old Gods".
6. Daenarys Targaryen is fluent in several languages. Which of the following is NOT one of the tongues she is shown to speak throughout the first five books in the series?

Answer: Ghiscari

Ghiscari is an extinct language. Daenarys learns the Dothraki language from her husband's people. In "A Storm of Swords", she pretends to need an interpreter for High Valyrian in order to negotiate a purchase of slave-soldiers. This means she understands everything that's being said, but the man she's trading with doesn't realize this.

Her interpreter is very surprised when she discovers Daenarys is fluent in High Valyrian.
7. What language or dialect does Arya Stark have to learn when she first arrives at the House of Black and White?

Answer: Braavosi

Arya speaks the Common Tongue and has studied High Valyrian. We learn in "A Feast for Crows" that she already knows a few words of Braavosi, because they are the same as High Valryian. She picks up a few words aboard ship, like "sea", "star", "please", "thank you" and "fire wine". Later, the "kindly man" tells her she must always return with three new pieces of knowledge, and sometimes she returns with three new words in the Braavosi tongue - occasionally quite shocking ones.
8. In northern Westeros, what would you call someone who has the ability to inhabit an animal, seeing through its eyes and joining its consciousness?

Answer: A warg

The Stark children show a distinct talent for being able to enter into the consciousness of their own direwolves, and some wildlings cultivate the skill with other kinds of animals. In Scandinavian mythology, however, a warg is a large wolflike creature that can be ridden by humans.

In the "Lord of the Rings" books, J.R.R. Tolkien describes wargs somewhat in this manner; the orcs can ride them into battle.
9. What's the ordinary English word for "dragonglass"?

Answer: Obsidian

Obsidian appears to have several important and potentially very useful characteristics in the George R.R. Martin universe. First, weapons made of "dragonglass" seem to be the only ones that have any effect on the zombielike wights. Second, it seems to be able to conduct a magical flame-light light.
10. What is the closest English word to describe the meaning of the term "maester"?

Answer: Doctor

The primary function of the maesters is generally to heal, but, as with our academic "doctorates", a maester also studies other subjects. In training, they receive chain links of different metals to represent the fields they have mastered. In some cases, they dabble in various types of magic.

At the higher levels of the calling, they serve as something like a "chief science officer" to the ruling power. They may teach young members of the nobility, and they can serve as part of the advisory council to a king or other lord.
