Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these occupations was not a member of the expedition that set out to hunt the Snark?

Answer: candle-stick maker

All of the hunters begin with "B". Interestingly enough, the Baker's friends call him "candle-ends" but there's no indication that he makes them.
2. What interesting number crops up in the "Snark" several times? It's the rule cited in the preface and it's the number of boxes of luggage the Baker forgets. (Hint: Think Douglas Adams)

Answer: 42

42 is an interesting number - apart from being the meaning of "life the universe and everything" there are some odd coincidences associated with it:
molybdenum is the 42nd most common element in the universe and the Starship Enterprise from "Star Trek" has 42 decks. Do a search on 42 and you'll find enough information for a hundred quizzes.
3. Which of these is listed as an acceptable means of hunting Snarks?

Answer: railway shares

"You may seek it with thimbles - and seek it with care;
 You may hunt it with forks and hope;
You may threaten its life with a railway-share;
 You may charm it with smiles and soap."
4. When the Butcher and the Beaver are in "a dismal and desolate valley", the Butcher gives the Beaver a natural history lesson. What bird (also mentioned in the Alice books) does he talk about?

Answer: The Jubjub bird

As far as I know there's no Bread-and-Butter Bird but it does sound suitably Carrollian though. A gryphon is a mythical creature with the head of a lion and the wings of an eagle - whatever it is, it's not a bird and there are no flamingos here. (I just added that to be sneaky)

The lesson goes:
"As to temper the Jubjub's a desperate bird,
 Since it lives in perpetual passion:
Its taste in costume is entirely absurd -
 It is ages ahead of the fashion:

"But it knows any friend it has met once before:
 It never will look at a bribe:
And in charity-meetings it stands at the door,
 And collects - though it does not subscribe.

"Its flavour when cooked is more exquisite far
 Than mutton, or oysters, or eggs:
(Some think it keeps best in an ivory jar,
 And some, in mahogany kegs:)

"You boil it in sawdust: you salt it in glue:
 You condense it with locusts and tape:
Still keeping one principal object in view -
 To preserve its symmetrical shape."
5. When the Banker is attacked by a Bandersnatch, what does he do?

Answer: All of these

His waistcoat turns white as well...
6. Which of these is one of the signs by which you may know "the true unmistakable Snark"?

Answer: It lacks a sense of humour.

"The first is its slowness in taking a jest
And it always looks grave at a pun."
7. How many are there in the crew hunting for the Snark?

Answer: 10

They a pretty motley crew of ten.
The Bellman, the Butcher, the Baker, the Beaver, the Bonnet Maker, The Boots, the Banker, the Billiard-Marker, the Barrister and the Broker.
8. If, when you find your Snark, it's a Boojum - then what happens?

Answer: You will softly and suddenly vanish away.

The Boojum tree of the Baja Peninsula is named after the Snark.
9. Who is it that finally discovers the Snark?

Answer: The Baker

In the end it's the Baker who finds it; the last words his companions hear are "It's a Boo-" as he softly and suddenly vanishes away.
10. A lot of places and things have been named after this poem. Where in the Indian Ocean will we find Snark Island and Boojum Rock? (Hint: they're east of India)

Answer: Andaman and Nicobar Islands

There's also a Boojum rock near Boston.
