Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which John Wyndham book features a group of connected alien children?

Answer: The Midwich Cuckoos

Published in 1957, "The Midwich Cuckoos" tells the story of a group of alien children born in one village in England. They have two distinct group minds, one for the boys and one for the girls. In addition to being telepathically linked to each other they can also use the group mind to control the actions of others.

The 1960 film "Village of the Damned" was a quite faithful screen adaptation.
2. In Robert Heinlein's "Starship Troopers", mankind is engaged in a war against which group with a hive mind?

Answer: The Bugs

Published in 1959, "Starship Troopers" follows the military career of Juan Rico as he rises through the ranks of the Mobile Infantry. The book is set during a time of interstellar war between mankind and the "Bugs", an arachnid type species who think as one and who have no concept of individuality.
3. "The joined" appear in which Arthur C. Clarke book?

Answer: The Light of Other Days

Arthur C.Clarke wrote "The Light of Other Days" in collaboration with Stephen Baxter. It examines how wormhole technology means that everyone can be observed all the time. No-one can hide anything from anyone, even the past can be observed as it really was. A movement against this develops a group mind, "The joined" by use of a neural interface.
4. The "Night's Dawn" trilogy features which telepathic group?

Answer: The Edenists

In Peter F. Hamilton's trilogy "The Edenists" are telepathically linked for emotional support and empathy, but retain their own individuality. They also use their telepathic links for planet wide referendums and discussions, which again demonstrates that even though a group mind exists, each individual within the group retains their own freedom of thought.
5. Theodore Sturgeon wrote about the "homo gestalt" in which book?

Answer: More Than Human

"More Than Human" takes Theodore Sturgeon's story "Baby is Three" and adds two extra parts to it, "The Fabulous Idiot" and "Morality". Six people, ranging from a mongoloid baby who thinks like a computer, to an air force officer with memory loss, come together to form "homo gestalt", the next step in human evolution.
6. The "Precogs" appear in which Philip K. Dick story?

Answer: The Minority Report

Published as a short story, "The Minority Report" was made into a 2002 film starring Tom Cruise. The "Precogs" are three people who can see into the future. Kept in semi-dark isolation they no longer retain any semblance of individuality or humanity. Everything has been given to their precognitive powers that prevent future crimes.
7. What is the name of the hive group in Michael Crichton's "Prey"?

Answer: The Swarm

Published in 2002, "Prey" shows what can happen when nanotechnology, genetic engineering and artificial intelligence combine to make swarms of intelligent mini robots that think as one and can infiltrate human bodies.
8. "The Comprise" is the hive mind that rules Earth in which book?

Answer: Vacuum Flowers

Published in 1987, "Vacuum Flowers" by Michael Swanwick is a cyberpunk novel, and is generally regarded as one of the seminal cyberpunk works. The heroine is the personality of a dead woman who takes over someone else's body and who, with four others, forms an uneasy alliance with "The Comprise".
9. "Pods" are the group mind in "Singularity's Ring". Who wrote it?

Answer: Paul Melko

Published in 2008, "Singularity's Ring" won the Locus Award for Best First Novel. It is set in a future when most of humanity has disappeared, and those that are left come together in groups of two to five people who have been genetically engineered so that a single new personality emerges from the grouping.
10. "Metaconcerts" appear in which Julian May series?

Answer: Galactic Milieu

Humanity is approaching unity with the galactic mind, but until this happens small groups of telepathic people can come together in small groups to form "metaconcerts", which can interact with each other. The series was published between 1989 and 1996. The "Saga of Pliocene Exile" can be considered a prequel to the "Galactic Milieu" as some of the characters carry over.
