1. Who is the eldest child?

Answer: Nels

In the beginning and again at the end Katrin says, "Nels was the oldest and only boy." In the original Broadway production Nels was played by veteran actor Marlon Brando. The show opened on Broadway in 1944.
2. What street do the main characters live on in San Francisco?

Answer: Steiner Street

The older people in the show are all from Norway. The children were all born in San Francisco where the show takes place. The adults do not pick up the San Francisco dialect even after all these years.
3. What is the name of Dagmar's cat?

Answer: Elizabeth

Later on it is revealed that Elizabeth is actually a tomcat so the father suggests he gets called Uncle Elizabeth after that.
4. Who does Aunt Trina want to marry?

Answer: Peter Thorkelson

Peter works at a funeral parlor and is a very timid man. They end up getting married and having a child together.
5. Who does Katrin tell Uncle Chris is the bossy aunt?

Answer: Jenny

Marta is not one of their aunts. She is Mama. After this, Christine says that she likes Sigrid the least because she whines too much.

Almost everyone is scared of Uncle Chris because he is so loud and forceful. The children find out when he's alive that he loves children and isn't as scary as they first thought. The aunts learn after he dies that he loved children and gave his money to helping children who may have been lame if it weren't for the medical treatment he provided.
10. Which of the daughters wrote the "book" (that is the one in the play) about Mama?

Answer: Katrin

Trina is not one of the daughters, she is an aunt. Katrin throughout the play tells about her memory of Mama. At the end, as in the beginning she says, "But first and foremost, I remember Mama."
