Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's start with an easy one. This 17-year-old girl moves to Forks, Washington and falls in love with her fellow high-school student after he saves her life. Turns out he's a vampire! Who is in love with the darkness that is Edward Cullen?

Answer: Bella Swan

All of these women are characters in the "Twilight" series, by Stephenie Meyer. The books have become so popular that in 2008, they spawned a wildly popular film series starring Kristen Stewart as Bella and Robert Pattinson as Edward. Bella is now the prototypical heroine who falls in love with the darkness.
2. The most famous vampire of all is Count Dracula, created by Bram Stoker. In Stoker's novel "Dracula", who is the unfortunate woman who is courted by three suitors at once, but ends up being turned into a vampire by Dracula?

Answer: Lucy Westenra

The turning of Lucy is the primary motivation behind the party of vampire hunters seeking to hunt and kill Dracula. Mina is a friend of Lucy's who ends up being bitten but is not turned into a vampire. Although the book portrays Lucy as a victim, many modern film adaptations of the novel involve Dracula seducing Lucy before turning her.
3. Another famous horror series, "The Vampire Chronicles" by Anne Rice, features the vampire Lestat. Who is Lestat's vampire companion/lover who narrates the first book of the series, "Interview with the Vampire"?

Answer: Louis de Pointe du Lac

Louis tells the story of his 200 years with Lestat to a reporter, hence the "Interview with the Vampire". The two live together as companions for a while but eventually have a falling out over a woman (surprise). At the end of the novel the two are estranged. The novel has been made into a movie starring Brad Pitt as Louis and Tom Cruise as Lestat.
4. A popular urban fantasy by Charlaine Harris, the "Southern Vampire Chronicles" describes an alternate history where vampires go public in 2002 with the news that they can peacefully co-exist with humans. Who is the Southern protagonist who, over the course of the series, falls in love with multiple vampires?

Answer: Sookie Stackhouse

Sookie Stackhouse lives in northern Louisiana in the town of Bon Temps. She can read human minds, but becomes attracted to vampire Bill Compton because she realizes she cannot "read" his thoughts. Over the course of many books, she also has relationships with another vampire, Eric Northman, and a weretiger, John Quinn.

In 2008, the books were adapted by HBO into the series "True Blood", starring Anna Paquin as Sookie.
5. This series by Laurell K. Hamilton features a half-German, half-Mexican female judo black belt who can raise zombies from the dead and is a trained vampire executioner. However, during the course of the 20+ books in the series, she falls in love with multiple supernatural creatures, including the creatures she is supposed to hunt. Who is the Vampire Hunter?

Answer: Anita Blake

Anita Blake is the star of the "Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter" series. Although the early books read more like thrillers, the later books in the series (over 20 books) focus more on her romantic relationships with vampires and lycanthropes, causing some to quip that Blake is a Vampire Slayer turned Layer.
6. "The Vampire Diaries" is a series for young adults featuring a love triangle between the two immortal vampire brothers Stefan and Damon Salvatore and a human female who is the reincarnation of a woman they once loved during the American Civil War. What is the name of the girl in love with and loved by the darkness?

Answer: Elena Gilbert

Elena is the doppleganger of Katherine Pierce, a vampire who turned the Salvatore brothers into vampires. Bonnie and Caroline are Elena's best friends. The books, written by L. J. Smith, were adapted into a TV series on the CW Network starting in 2006.
7. "The Silver Kiss" is a 1992 vampire romance featuring a teenage girl protagonist whose mother is dying of bone cancer and whose best friend is growing more and more distant. Feeling isolated from the world, she eventually finds comfort from her relationship with the mysterious vampire Simon. What is the name of this girl who is in love with the darkness?

Answer: Zoe

Written by Annette Curtis Klause, "The Silver Kiss" is a serious young-adult novel that deals with the complex topic of impending death to loved ones. It's also notable in that it was written well before the recent modern wave of popular vampire romances.
8. More famous for killing vampires than loving them, this heroine with supernatural reflexes, strength, and healing abilities is the star of a series of comic books and novels named after her (and which continue the storyline of a popular TV show). What famous blonde goes by the moniker "the Vampire Slayer", yet nonetheless ends up falling in love with the darkness?

Answer: Buffy Summers

Buffy the Vampire Slayer was created by Joss Whedon as a backlash against the archetype of the screaming ditzy blonde unable to defend herself against the forces of evil. The character became a cultural phenomenon. Nevertheless, part of her story arc involves her getting intimate with at least two vampires, Angel and Spike, showing that she's not always in Slayer mode.
9. Stephen Brust is an author more famous for his Vlad Taltos novels, but his fantasy novel "Agyar" features a narrator, Jack Agyar, who doesn't ever explicitly explain that he has entered the darkness. What is the first name of the dancer who falls in love with Agyar, causing him to make a life-changing decision?

Answer: Susan

I'd love to say more about the nature of Agyar's darkness but to do so would spoil the ending of the wonderful story Brust has written. If you are tired of reading horror novels that come off more like Harlequin romances, I strongly suggest you find and read a copy of "Agyar".
10. Neil Gaiman's "Sandman" graphical novels chronicle the stories of the Endless, anthropomorphic entities that embody fundamental concepts such as Despair, Desire, and Destiny. In the offshoot novel, "Death: The High Cost of Living", Death takes on human form as a perky Goth girl for one day to understand life better. What suicidal young man meets her and eventually realizes that his love for Death gives him a reason to live?

Answer: Sexton

Death of the Endless is one of Gaiman's most popular characters. She embodies terrifying power but in the highly unconventional aspect of an easy-going young woman with wisdom and empathy. Through interacting with Death as the girl "Didi", the suicidal teenager Sexton learns that there are reasons to live after all.
