Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Before his fight with Mashiba, Ippo reviews a tape of Mashiba fighting which boxer that Ippo had previously faced?

Answer: Fujiwara Yoshio

Fuji brings a tape over with Mashiba's match against Fujiwara in the Rookie King Tournament. It is no surprise that Mashiba dominates him easily.
2. Who does Ippo spar with before the match?

Answer: Kimura

Kimura helps Ippo practice prior to his match against Mashiba in the East Japan Rookie King Finals. Ippo's step in speed has really improved as well as his punching power. He hurts Kimura in the spar, but is thankful for his help.
3. Who gets the first hit?

Answer: Mashiba

Ippo charges in without touching Mashiba's glove and sends out a furious hook. Mashiba dodges and takes up his Hitman style. Ippo slowly walks in and is nailed by a flicker.
4. Ippo beats on Mashiba for the entire first round.

Answer: False

Ippo eats a lot of Mashiba's flickers and barely manages to avoid his chopping right. Mashiba is clearly leading this round.
5. What does Mashiba say about Ippo's power between the first and second round?

Answer: It will be his undoing

During the break each side's corner gives them advice. Kamaogawa tells Ippo to do a better job avoiding the flicker. Mashiba's coach tells him not to let Ippo get in that close again. Mashiba just laughs, saying that Ippo's own power will be his undoing.
6. What body part does Mashiba use to block Ippo's punches?

Answer: Elbow

Ippo does much better this round, he dodges Mashiba's blows and has him on the run. Takamura wonders why Mashiba keeps leaving himself open, knowing the destructive power of Ippo's fists. The answer is soon revealed as Ippo goes for inside blow yet again, he is met with Mashiba's elbow. Mashiba counted on this happening and he developed an elbow block for the occasion.
7. The block ends up being a double-edged sword because it also breaks Mashiba's bones.

Answer: True

After using the block a couple times, Ippo's hand is severely damaged. Then it is revealed that Mashiba can't lift his arm. This not only cuts of his guard, but also his main form of attacking, the flickers.
8. Who gets downed first?

Answer: Ippo

Ippo comes out of the corner a few steps quicker than Mashiba and gets a shot into his side with his left hand. Ippo buries left after left into Mashiba's body, but Mashiba hangs on by a thread. He remembers his sister and through a sheer force of will, bends his elbow! He's back in the Hitman Style! Ippo thinks Mashiba is bluffing so he rushes in. Needless to say he gets hit by Mashiba's flicker, but worse yet Mashiba follows up with a chopping right that downs Ippo.

A chopping right is a punch that is an anti-infighting move. Mashiba uses it to finish off his opponents after he hits them with flickers.

He also uses it on anyone that gets inside his flicker.
9. What is the final decision of the fight?

Answer: Ippo by KO

Mashiba comes at Ippo with a right, but Ippo dashes in and hits him three times in a row with a strong right punch. Kamogawa doesn't like this as Ippo's hand is hurt very badly. Mashiba is stunned and about to fall over; he grabs onto Ippo for support but Ippo nails him with a left in the stomach. Mashiba goes flying back and Ippo dashes in hitting Mashiba right on the chin with a powerful right uppercut.

He flies up, and then comes back down on his feet, but Ippo is already in his motion for a right straight and he blasts him again. Mashiba flies off the ropes and lands face down on the canvas.

The referee starts counting, but the Kamogawa group in the audience yells at him saying they don't need a count. Mashiba tries with all his heart to get back up, but he can't.

The stunning conclusion to the East Japan Rookie King Tournament.
10. What round does the fight end in?

Answer: Third

In the first round, Ippo is totally beaten by Mashiba's flickers. Then in the second round Mashiba and Ippo are both damaged by the elbow blocks. Then Ippo KOs Mashiba in the third round.
