Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Although all of these have been made into major motion pictures, only one was written by Rollins; which is it?

Answer: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

Yes, he did indeed write the novelization of the fourth installment of "Indiana Jones". Set during the Cold War, it follows Indy as he travels to South America to try and rescue a fellow professor. Of course, nothing in the life of Indiana Jones is ever that easy; he ends up stuck with a James Dean-esque teen, a former flame, and a bunch of Russians. The film starred Harrison Ford, Shia LeBeouf, Karen Allen, and Cate Blanchett.

The other books were written by Clive Cussler ("Sahara"), J.R.R Tolkien ("Lord of the Rings"), and Isaac Asimov ("I, Robot").
2. The author's birth name is James Rollins.

Answer: No

Actually, he was born James Paul Czajkowski. Along with being an author, he has also had a veterinary practice.
3. First published under a different pen name, what is the name of Rollins' first novel?

Answer: Wit'ch Fire

Sometimes printed simply as "Witch Fire", this is also the first book in his "The Banned and the Banished" series.

Both "Deep Fathom" and "Shadowfall" are written with a more mature audience in mind, while "Jake Ransom and the Skull King's Shadow" is the first in a series written for teens and young adults.
4. What is the name of Rollins' fictional black-ops group?

Answer: SIGMA Force

The Greek letter sigma looks something like an English "M" that has fallen over on its side.

Rollins' SIGMA Force is a group of people that are often referred to as "scientist-soldiers". They investigate mysteries all over the globe, as well as aiding those who call on them for help. Most of their work is so top-secret that only the President of the United States and one or two others ever know about it, but they routinely save the majority of mankind.
5. Which of these novels first introduced us to Rollins' SIGMA Force?

Answer: Sandstorm

"Sandstorm" also introduces us to Painter Crowe, who will become the director of SIGMA Force.

The three incorrect answers are also James Rollins novels, but they are all stand-alone adventures. "Deep Fathom" has solar flares and the damage/catastrophe they could cause as a central theme; "Amazonia" explores what might happen if mankind discovered a way to heal physical ailments (such as amputations), but only at a price. "Excavation" is set in the Peruvian Andes and centers on a tribe of natives not seen by outsiders for centuries, and the mysterious substance they call 'el Sangre del Diablo' or 'the Blood of the Devil'.
6. Rollins' books often deal with both real and fictional locales. Which of these places does not feature in "The Doomsday Key"?

Answer: Australia

"The Doomsday Key" is the sixth installment of the "SIGMA Force" series; along with the places mentioned, the Lake District of England, Egypt, and France all figure into the storyline.
7. While creating characters you quickly come to either love or hate, Rollins makes sure not to neglect actually giving his creations memorable names. Which of these is NOT one of his characters' names?

Answer: Patrick Bowers

Nathan Rand appears in "Amazonia"; Monk Kokkalis shows up in several of the "SIGMA Force" series, and Jack Kirkland debuts in "Deep Fathom", although he also shows up in later novels.

Patrick Bowers is the main character in Steven James' series titled "The Bowers Files".
8. Featured in several of the SIGMA Force novels is a mysterious group known as "The Guild" that seems to want to cause harm to mankind as a whole. One of the ways they attempt this is to send out assassins. What is the name of the female assassin we first meet in "Map of Bones"?

Answer: Seichan

Although the incorrect answers are also women from Rollins, only Seichan is an assassin. Ashley Carter is in "Subterranean", and is an archeologist. Lorna Polk is a veterinarian, and is a main figure in "Alter of Eden". Cassandra Sanchez is in "Sandstorm", and, although she is taking orders from The Guild, she is not a trained assassin.
9. Under which of these pen names has James Rollins also published?

Answer: James Clemens

In fact, he has, as of 2012, published two series under this name - "The Godslayer" and "The Banned and the Banished" series.
10. The novels often have at least one character with some sort of medical issue. Which of these is not dealt with in "The Last Oracle"?

Answer: Multiple Personality Disorder

In this interesting book, Monk Kokkalis (who lost a hand in a previous book) is revealed to have amnesia. However, he is saved from a particularly nasty plot against him by a group of autistic savants; he will later return the favor.
