Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What does Adele call her nurse?

Answer: bonne

Adele is French. But that is not a problem for Jane, who has learned French very well from Madame Pierrot in Lowood.
2. What was the name of the servant whom Mrs. Fairfax said laughs in that evil way?

Answer: Grace

When Jane came to Thornfield, she was told that Grace sews there. Later, she comes to know that Grace actually takes care of Mr. Rochester's mad wife.
3. What sort of imaginary animal did Jane think of on the night she first saw Mr. Rochester?

Answer: a Gytrash

Bessie had told her this story. She said that a Gytrash was either a horse, mule, or large dog. What made her disbelieve that it was a Gytrash was that a man was riding it. Nothing rides on a Gytrash.
4. Was Mr. Rochester an only child?

Answer: No

Mrs. Fairfax said that Mr. Rochester (Edward) had an elder brother, Rowland. Rowland and the brothers' father practically made Edward marry a woman who was on the verge of being mad. Gradually she did become mad and drunk, just like her mother.
5. How did someone try to kill Mr. Rochester at night while he was asleep?

Answer: setting his room on fire

Jane had heard the evil laugh. She was too scared to sleep alone, so she was going to Mrs. Fairfax's room, when she saw Mr. Rochester's room on fire. She doused the fire with water and told Mr. Rochester everything.
6. What was the name of Blanche Ingram's sister?

Answer: Mary

There were eight ladies altogether at the party. There were Mrs. Eshton, her daughters Amy and Louisa, Lady Lynn, Mrs. Colonel Dent, the Dowager Lady Ingram, and her daughters Blanche and Mary. The last three were the tallest of the group.
7. When the fine people were playing charades, what was the first act of?

Answer: a marriage

Blanche and Mr. Rochester were the ones being "married". Sir George Lynn was the clergyman, and Adele was, of course, the flower girl.
8. Where did Mr. Mason come from?

Answer: Spanish Town, Jamaica

Later we find out that Mr. Mason is actually Mr. Rochester's brother-in-law. He will probably also become crazy one day.
9. Who did the gypsy turn out to be?

Answer: Mr. Rochester

Mr. Rochester was probably trying to find out if Jane liked him as much as he liked her, but it didn't work. Jane was too smart.
10. How had Mr. Mason been attacked?

Answer: with a knife

His own sister attacked him. That proves she's mad. Mr. Mason was supposed to wait for Mr. Rochester, so they wouldn't be alone with her, but he really wanted to talk to her, and didn't listen. That was really stupid of him.
