It's the real John Sung's talisman. When the "Ghost" plays Sung's role, he wears it on a leather band around his neck. Sonny Li later can help to reveal the "Ghost's" false identity by groping it while he is killed, thus showing Rhyme that the murderer wore it.

William's father, Sam Chang, is the one with the scar that comes from calligraphy.

Lon thinks that Amelia has an affair with John Sung because he saw her entering his flat at 2 am. In fact, Amelia only went there because Sung could cure her arthritis, or at least help her a little. The one who shoots too early, making it possible for the "Ghost" to escape is Alan Coe, not Sachs.

Sam Chang pretends to be Joseph Tan in order to meet the "Ghost" and kill him. Sam's father, Chang Jiechi, prepares Sam's tea with a few sleeping tablets and goes to the "Ghost" instead of Sam. But he doesn't manage to kill the "Ghost".

Everyone thought that the "Ghost" wanted to kill the immigrants because they knew his face, but it all turns out to be one big conspiracy - the "Ghost" had been ordered to accept these people on the trip and then kill them, because they were dissidents. He's a professional killer.

Rhyme tells her who the real "Ghost" is, and she then accuses Alan Coe in order to make the "Ghost" feel secure.

The "Ghost" killed the real John Sung right after the "Fuzhou Dragon" sank and then took on his identity. Rhyme finds this out when he examines the traces on Sonny Li's body: Before Sonny died, he groped the stony monkey, so that Lincoln finds traces of steatite under his fingernails. He then remember the doctor's talisman.
